3. A Photo Tour Of The Durabook D14RY

Here's a pictorial view of the Durabook D14RY from all sides. We include views of the outside and inside as well as views of a few components.

This is a mid-size notebook measuring 12.25" x 1.5" x 10.25" and tipping the scales at 6 lb 12 oz. Ruggedizing includes reinforced corners which help to protect the notebook from vibration and drops.

The front of the Durabook D14RY from left to right includes the Multi-Card reader slot (SD, MMC, MS, MS PRO), microphone jack, headphone jack and the DVD drive. There is a locking mechanism on the DVD drive to keep it closed on impact.

The left side of the unit, from left to right includes power input, VGA out, modem, 10/100/1000 LAN port, smart card slot (top) and PC card slot (bottom).

The Durabook D14RY is port heavy on the right side so we've split the pictures into two sets. Here, on the right side the unit are 3 x USB 2.0 ports and one IEEE 1394 (Firewire) port.

On the right side toward the back is one serial port.

Rugged or not, the core components of the Durabook are easily accessible when you strip off the underside cover. At the top left surrounded by cushioning rubber is the hard drive bay, top right is the CPU, cooling and memory.

At the heart of the Durabook is the dual core Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 (which is covered with silver grey thermal paste). It's clocked at a relatively fast 2.33 GHz has 4 MB of L2-Cache. The FSB runs at 667 MHz.

The Durabook D14RY as tested included a pair of 1 GB 667MHz DDR2 memory modules.

Our test system came with a 160 GB 5400 RPM Fujitsu MHW2160BH SATA hard disk drive with a buffer cache size of 8 MB and an average seek time of 12ms.
