Now your children's privates will remain that way.

Last week we learned of airport security scanners that use low doses of radiation to make 3D black and white scans of volunteer passengers. The scans can reveal objects concealed beneath their clothes including wallets, combs, pens, and anything else, including parts of the anatomy.

Originally, children could take part in the scanning program with their parents' consent, but now it revisions to the program are now banning anyone under 18 years of age from being scanned.

According to the Times Online, Terri Dowty of Action on Rights for Children, a UK internet based group supporting the United Nations convention on the rights of the child, said: “It’s not right to put the machine operators in the position where they are being asked to break the law. Under present legislation the taking of images of children in this way cannot be done.”

A Manchester Airport spokeswoman responded to the decision to exclude children from the test: “Experts in child protection have told us that this is a grey area. On this basis, if these experts tell us that there might be a problem then we’ll work with them to establish a definitive position. In the meantime no one under 18swill participate in the trial when adult passengers start being invited to take part in a couple of weeks.”

The devices will be used in a 12-month trial run.

Awesome, so essentially if this goes live everywhere, I'll be subjected to a strip search every time I wish to get on a plane. Aren't there better ways? I'm self conscious.

Bingo!! if the scanners show gonads, for once i pitty the operator because some people look fugly with cloths off, not to mention the discomfort of scanning kids. I understand that they want to go "Total Recall" with these x-ray scanners but till then, lets just remove the devices all together. its not making the check in lines any faster.

What if it's a 17-yr old killer?

You know it's messed up when you pass through the machine and the operator just starts laughing...

Wait until you're over 18?

That, or just pose for them while you stand in the scanner. "It's the angle dude..."

I have to say, I'm not really into the idea of these body scanners either. Frankly, I think it's really an invasion of privacy all around. Not to mention, how easily could this be abused? They say the viewer of the images is in a separate location so they don't get to actually see the person. But what's to say they don't just radio to the security on site and say, "Wait, send that man/woman back through... think I... missed something."

Regardless of pictures being able to be taken or not. Someone is still viewing other people in the nude essentially.

I'm just at a loss as to what they're searching for that isn't detected using conventional security methods (metal detector, scanning bags, etc.)... hard plastic knives?

Plastic explosives can be packaged to blend in with clothing, as could some sort of bio/chem weapon. The only way to definitely test for things like that is to scan for certain residues (like the US Secret Service does when you enter the White House). The odds that these types of scanners ever thwart a terrorist plot are nonexistent.

How about celebrities? Bet you if they scan them, they will start "youtube"ing these, or worse. Lol.

So they're letting the underage terrorists know they won't be checked and the adult ones that if they hide a device on a kid they don't have to worry. Good work, the system is rendered worthless as most systems that give the illusion of safety.

Yeah, you should feel bad for the operators... cuz, god knows people like me would go through and intentionally pelvis thrust to try to get their "junk" to jiggle in the scan, and be all like "HA! Look at mah huge ballz, sucka!"

I dislike this system, mostly because I don't want anyone seeing my wife completely nude. I don't mind myself being completely nude, but yeah, no on my wife. I can't see this going down well with the Muslim community too, who incidentally it's completely aimed at (In the western mind, "muslim = terrorist"). I'm against it entirely. It should be outlawed before it gets abused.

Oh so i see to stop the pedophiles form getting the job but not the just pain perverts great logic just trade one pervert for another or what regular perverts aren't as motivated as pedophiles to get that job. Why don't you just hire people and if they act weird fire them?

Either you use it all the time or else it's just a waste of money.

I really don't mind being seen in the nude (im a guy). while this may be the equivalent of a strip search it isn't terribly effective. there are other less intrusive methods that are far more sensitive like Mass Spectrometers (which are in use in some places), scent detection (everything has a chemical 'odor'), OR if they really want to use this technology take OCR or pattern matching AI technology and rely on it to parse the images. no human will ever see them!

This is a good idea, it's like from the future. They should just put cameras in everyone's houses to make sure their not terrorists. But there should only be women looking at cameras of children's bathrooms. I don't want to die from terrorists but I don't want there to be pedafiles either.

So in your future world, there are no women pedafiles?

You have turned 18, you can now...

1) Buy lottery tickets

2) Legally buy cigarettes

3) Forget any youth offenses on your drivers license

4) Have total freedom from your parents

5) Be sujected to genitalia scans at airports...

Awww wtf...

you forgot to add the [/sarcasm] tag right?

Good news for the rights of children, but what about the rights of everyone else? The true horror of terrorism isn't the 0.0000000000000000001% of the population who are hurt (though every death is tragic); it is the way authoritarian douche-bags rub their hands at the perfect excuse to erode mankind's freedom, privacy and dignity based on the pretence that it makes us safer.

Ah, being informed changes everything.

It looks like a friggin untextured 3d model, that's SO PERVERSE.

People and their idiocy amaze me, and now we have singlehandedly made this tech useless because of people who were too stupid to look up the damn image.
