YouTube is Now Getting 4 Billion Hits a Day

- By - Source : Reuters

Since it was founded in 2005, YouTube has brought us gems like 'Stalking Cat,' 'David After Dentist' and much more. The successful video sharing and hosting site grows more popular each day, but just how many hits is YouTube getting these days?

According to Reuters, Google has said that the video hosting and sharing site it acquired in November 2006 is now getting over four billion hits each and every single day. This represents a 25 percent increase over eight months ago. Users aren't just consuming content, either. Every minute, a whopping 60 hours of content is uploaded. This is compared to 48 hours per minute just last May.

The huge jump in streaming and uploading is attributed to the growing popularity of smartphones and tablets, which enable users to capture and upload video on the go, as well as stream from anywhere with a WiFi or even 3G connection.

"please wait for this important message while your video loads....you can skip the ad in 15 seconds" as it counts down as some dumb commercial plays.

So 48 hours-60 is 12 hours of extra advertising per minute compared with last year?

I have noticed that more you-tube videos have forced commercials at the start of the video and this would explain this increase.

The commercial is streamed as a short video and then the video you had to wait for streams as the second video. Each video stream counts as a hit.

60 minutes of video uploaded every minute, out of which 59 minutes and 59 seconds is pure stupidity.

I've given up on Youtube for a while now because every time I log in, it also logs into my GMail account, which incidentally tracks everything I type in the Google address bar. No, thanks! Sometimes I search for some nasty kinky sh*t and I don't want that on my record.

Youtube is the new TV, i hardly watch TV nowadays, only during breakfast for 10 minutes and there I watch the news or listen to some music on MTV.

We have reached the moment where I can chose what to watch, when and where. And having to watch a 15 second add ? come on guys I use that to make a fast bathroom pause and take a piss xD ! I still remember when I watched a TV serie in which every episode lasted an hour, 20 minutes of this hour being JUST ads, now that was ridiculous.

The new YT layout is awful. It stifles creativity, is a pain in the ass the navigate and is bugged to hell. I think there will be a significant loss in casual browsing as a result of this horrendous spectacle they call an improvement.

Seems a perfectly sensible, valid argument in favor of privacy. It's the reason I signed up to YT using different e-mail accounts for different channels and interests. They then decided to consolidate all these settings into one all-seeing eye. So why do this? Security and privacy!

Yes, how secure it is having all your eggs in one basket. How sensible it is to give a corporate entity you personal details, including your mobile phone number. How sensible to let them where you've been on the Internet, and what you like looking at. All this type of information is being stored, processed, and sold to the highest bidder. I don't agree with it one bit.

Anyone who knows the slightest thing about security knows the dangers of having your data stored in one place, using one password and allowing it to be scrutinized by people you hardly know. Yet Google and YT act like this is the norm.

When YT updated their services they gave me a few weeks to update my records, or face losing my profiles. I still tried my best however to hide my details or flat out lie despite the effort required. I recommend you do the same especially with explosive increase in mobile usage. The technology is accelerating at such a rate that all this information can be processed and retained a lot faster and cheaper than before. This information is also being sold. I do not for one moment think this is merely an act of looking after our interests and our security, not with this much information at their disposal and not with the connections they have within the industry.

As for YT in general, it's not what it used to be for me. When it first started I really though it was the alternative media, but some things I've seen on there have suggested it's everything but. So many people have had their accounts jacked for the most silly reasons, people are afraid of voicing their opinions. Then, there are the 'flagging armies' who spend months trawling that site trying to shut people up they don't agree with. Indeed, the Obama administration has been quite open about it's own propaganda army, one that is continually seeking out views and tracing their source. Up yours Jack.

lol This reminds me of that scene out of Forbidden Planet, where they're walking around the Krell's computer labyrinth, as system so powerful and vast it could turn thoughts into reality. Most of it used to store robot p0rn.

the recent user interface change took away my favorite part of youtube, a page dedicated to recommendations. yea i know they are on the side, but i loved having 5 videos a row and 4 collems for a total of about 20-30 videos a page... i hate how youtube looks now, but o well, i just stopped using it aside from a google search or subscriptions.

It's very small compared to the time spend on facebook by the people who can't get a life.

I hope the US gov't bans youtube.

We'd have a revolution against SOPA and PIPA and already passed draconian copyright law.

No, Youtube can be an fantastic source for instruction videos, documentaries etc.

For example tips on musicproduction with a sequencer, tips on other certain programs, different exercises to prevent injuries in sport.

Yes, you can spend the time just watching another cat video, but that is also the case with normal TV.
I my mind, youtube is less of a time waster than normal TV since you can do the aforementioned things in youtube with the added benefit of having everything linked.

That is, if you want to learn something. The people who are time wasters will waste their time on Tv, facebook, twitter and so on regardless...

Ok, i don't get it. Chrome has AdBlockPlus too, you know...why does everyone keep talking like it's only on firefox? It was on ff first, ok, but still, it's supported on others too.

One someone's new channel layout, click on 'Feed'. You can instantly see what they've been viewing. You can instantly see their comments. You can instantly see their personal habits and tastes. Now how can this be good for privacy? It basically allows anyone with an axe to grind, to stalk their prey relentlessly. Due to the ridiculously complicated and unnecessary interface, the affected user may not be able to alter their security settings in order to circumvent such an unwanted interest in their personal affairs.

What MTV variation do you have that actually plays music? Every time I check the listings to see what's on, MTV is never playing music. Its usually reality TV or sometimes a movie.

Just imagine the ad revenue Google gets from those obnoxious ads.
