This Robot Mimics Human Reasoning

Artificial intelligence takes on human-like reasoning and learning.

Robotic technology never ceases to amaze us, and the SOINN (self-organizing incremental neural network) robot certainly isn't an exception. Led by Osamu Hasegawa, a research team at the Tokyo Institute of Technology has present an incredible robot that is capable of human reasoning and learning. The basis was to create a robot that utilizes a pattern and algorithm-based artificial intelligence, allowing it to adapt to various situations and environments in order to continue learning.

In its demonstration, the SOINN robot was able to take visual, auditory and tactile input data to learn and perform simple tasks. When confronted with a new task, the robot utilizes data from its past experiences, along with its sensory input to determine the optimal behavior for the given situation or environment. If it is still unfamiliar, it can even communicate with other robots via Wi-Fi in order to learn a solution.

Hasegawa explains that the robot's lack of complicated and exhaustive algorithms allow possibilities of adaptation and learning that can be molded to react to various situations.

"for example, suppose this robot doesn't know how to make tea, and it's sent to an elderly person who lives alone.
and suppose that person asks it to make a cup of green tea. the robot doesn't know how, so it asks robots around the world
how to make tea. suppose, for example, that a robot in the UK tells it how to make bitish-style tea. we think this robot
will become able to transfer that knowledge to its immediate situation, and make green tea using a Japanese teapot."

Although SOINN pretty much sounds like Skynet waiting to happen, we're just going to hope that these robots don't decide that the extermination of the human race is reasonable.
