Panasonic Lumix FZ35 : Image quality

3. Image quality

The FZ35's electronics are new from one end to the other, from the higher definition of the sensor (though it's no larger in size) to the Venus Engine HD processor. We were anxious to see what it could do.

Overall, the image quality proved quite good. Details were visible, except in interior shots and at close distances, where we noticed a lack of sharpness in the upper right of the image in our lab - a fault we hadn't seen with the FZ28 and FZ18, which use the same lens. It's probably just that the camera we tested wasn't quite up to standard. We didn't notice the same faults in "real life," where the FZ35 delivered sharp photos throughout its range. So whatever the problem was, it wasn't major.

As usual, handling of electronic noise was good up to 200 ISO. Billowing become more evident beyond that point, but remained within reasonable limits up to 800 ISO.

The automatic white balance is good with exterior shooting, and chromatic aberrations were very well contained. With interior shooting, the white balance had a tendency to favor warm colors (red), but the shots were well exposed.

The optical zoom is still just as impressive, with precise results in telephoto shooting. The optical stabilization does exactly what it's intended to do - it keeps you from having to increase the sensitivity in a given situation. The macro mode also worked well.

Just received my new FZ35 and had a chance to test the camera at the beach. Zoom is perfect from what I can tell, video is quick to record, sound was pretty fair even in the wind. Feel in the hand is nicely balanced, light weight but very comfortable to hold. Very nice that the still picture settings such as sports mode, worked well for video as well. I no longer need to carry two cameras around for casual family outings. I highly enjoy using this camera and the results even in low light more than meet my needs. In fact I would dare compare the low light ability to that of a good DSLR of two years ago.

Hmmm.. thinking about getting this camera, does anyone know if there is any limit on how long you can capture video, I think previous Panasonic models it was limited at 15min. Let say you have an 16GB SD card can you continuously capture video until the card is full or batteries dies?

As far as know, in AVCHD mode you can record till your memory is full.
