First 3D HDTVs Sell Out in One Week

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Panasonic is now forced to take back-orders.

Go figure. Wednesday Bloomberg said that Panasonic Corp. has already sold out of 3D HDTVs in the U.S. after one week of availability. Hitoshi Otsuki, the senior managing director heading Panasonic’s overseas operations, said that the company is now taking back-orders.

"It’s a great opportunity to turn around our TV business," he said without providing specific figures.

On March 10 Panasonic became the first manufacturer to sell 3D HDTVs in the U.S. The 50-inch plasma units went on sale at Best Buy and included a pair of glasses and a 3D Blu-ray player. The entire package retailed for a whopping $2,899.99.

Looks like not-so-cash-strapped consumers are really digging the new 3D-at-home technology. Is it still a fad, or is 3D technology here to stay?

Ah, but "sold out" could mean they sold both units they had...
Any clue as to the volume sold?

Early adopters =(

When this tech drops by a quarter in 6 months and has 5 new revisions, they'll be wishing they had waited.

since it was sold at best buy, they most likely got them on 12 month no payments

It seems like people have been touting both the virtues of 3D as a viable format, and sounding its death bell since it first hit theaters. I have a feeling, though, that with modern technology improving the medium we might actually see it here to stay. As to the market share it may take, who can say? I'm kind of hoping for some kind of 3D video conferencing tech someday.

"nifty"

Just to be a little more specific as well, you need a minimum of a 120hz screen to display 60fps content twice in which the glasses are used as a shutter to display what is necessary for each eye to display the 3d effect. Plasma or lcd does not matter, although I am curious to see which will remain the value holder :)

When mass produced this technology will cost $100 extra at most, with the most expensive component is the glasses themselves. When you buy $1000+ 50 inch TV, it is stupid not to pay this $100 to get 3D. The breakthrough is the speed of the LCD TV (plasma always had it) so that the images can be switched very fast, and BR discs that can have HD stereo video on single disk with multiple layers.
It is here to stay.

People with bad eyesight might have a problem. If the focal point is off a few people might suffer headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Wonder if they can develop #D without the glasses.

On another note, how much do extra glasses cost?

Panasonic sold out its 3D TV's in the first week.

Missing from the article is all 50 of em that went on sale around the U.S. lol. Thats how they get their investors all wet in there pants by using persuasion speak instead of actual facts for them to see.

Wrong! Misubishi has been selling 3D HDTVs for quite some time, they are just DLP not flat panels.

I saw a demo at Sony Style store and think this 3d stuff is very cool. There was a demo of a polar bear swimming in a water that looks like bding in a zoom exhibit. Too bad these things cost too much. I hope they have firmware to update my TV so I can get those glasses, otherwise I wouldn't get a new tv until my current tv die.

I have had my Misubishi TV for over 6 months for gaming. I can vouch this isn't the first HDTV.

Yup, and they work just as well, are bigger, and cost nearly 1/3 what these ones are selling for. "First 3D Plasmas" would be much more accurate.

I just came back from best buy and they were indeed sold out of the Panasonic. They had plenty of the Samsungs however and even had a demo set up that was extremely impressive.

Let me get this straight. A '3DTV' is just a normal TV with 120Hz, right?

Been selling Samsung 3D LED's since the end of February where I work, still have plenty in stock. So 1) Panasonic has not been the first to release a 3D TV, and therefore 2) all 3D TV's have not sold out in a week.
