Mario Creator Mentions New Nintendo Hardware

1:00 PM - February 9, 2010 - By Jane McEntegart - Source : Tom's Guide US

Rumors about a new Nintendo platform have been floating around for a while now. Up until now there was nothing solid, just that the company would show something off something totally new at next month's Game Developers Conference.

Now, one of the biggest Nintendo names has hinted that the company is working on something new. At an awards ceremony recently, Mario-man, Shigeru Miyamoto, said that he was busy working on the next iteration of Zelda as well as a new Wii project, which uses the MotionPlus peripheral. However, Joystiq reports that the Nintendo executive also dropped hints about a new platform.

The source for this little tidbit is unfortunately vague. Originally in Japanese, the only translation available is from Google. As far as we can tell, Miyamoto said he's also working on "something else" that's "interesting" and has to do with the development of new hardware.

Feel free to check it out and make of it what you will.

In the meantime, let's play wishlists! What kind of platform would you like to see from Nintendo? Let us know in the comments below.

I have seen Wii emulators for the PC running @ 1080p and even with the cartoonish graphics of most Wii games, it looks great. I don't think the system needs to support Blu-Ray but maybe a small HDD or enough built in Flash Memory to support small installs for dual layer DVD size games. This would allow a considerable boost in development possibilities as well as modern graphics capabilities. It wouldn't quite push it into the PS3 realm but more XBox 360's current capabilites, allowing them to maintain the lower price point.

Not the Wii!!! Maybe Nintendo will finally find their boat of casual gamer island [read multimedia and internet browsing/"gameplay" in the living room].

Not the Wii HD? I think Nintendo missed the boat on multimedia and internet browsing/gameplay in the living room.

You do know the wii has Opera as a browser option right? I decided to use Wii's with 42" screens to run content advertisements at work - much cheaper and more capabilities in the browser than a £5k dedicated system, though the next ones will be PS3-based for full HD as the screens will be going up to 50" plus...

Well apparently that little boat of casual gammers is what PS3 and Xbox is trying to get in on the boat with. Why? From a business standpoint, Nintendo is in the money, while Sony and MS is...looking from the outside in. From a Hardcore Gamer's standpoint, the Wii is a kids toy - so wut? Its all about the bling.

If I was in the same business as Nintendo...I'd do the samething. It keeps the $$$$ coming. But most hardcore gamers, put them in Nintendo's situation, wouldn't know or careless about $$$ but rather "How powerful the processor and graphisc" has to be.

I will so laugh my head off at the Xbox and PS3 fanboys who diss the Wii if Nintendo, totally out of the blue, announce a next-gen console with a customised IBM Power7 CPU and some kind of experimental ATI HD7000-esque graphics.
Totally backwards compatible with all old Nintendo games and agreements with all major software labels as the hardcore platform of choice.

Won't happen of course, but hilarious if they did.

They could make a Wii that plays tricked-out Crysis

They still might, so reserve judgement

the Wii uses modified GC hardware, plus a dedicated physics processor. get your facts straight.

I'd definitely like to see Nintendo get the Wii hardware up to current standards. I have had a Wii since it's release, and other than a few choice titles, it has been pretty disappointing.

You are joking right? The Opera browser is horrid due to lack of video resolution and working plugins. 480P just doesn't cut it. Thank goodness for my HTPC!

redodson, Even if you do bump the games up they will look much cleaner but the max resolution has little to do with how a game looks overall. Its the programming, technologies, game engine and all types of texture resolution, mipmapping ability, design ETC.... that decide how a game translates to the TV, not its output resolution.

Turning Wii games into 1080p games will make them look better and clean them up, but they are still nothing more then glorified gamecube games and Nintendo's next system needs to be much more powerful.

How is this news? Companies always get started on their next platform when they release their current one. I thought this was obvious fact by now.

Why is everyone expecting the Wii to start trying to compete with the 360/PS3? That has never been Nintendo's goal with the Wii, why would they suddenly start now? Over 67 million consoles worldwide, and they are consistently fighting for top spots with their in-house offerings like Sports Resort and Wii Fit. Seems to me like they've found their place - right now, they don't need super hi-def offerings to be competitive. They may in the future, but for now, they are doing quite well.

it's not going to be a new console, it's going to be a new, possibly-gimmicky peripheral that only a handful of games will make use of, and only about 1 or 2 (official nintendo games no doubt) will do right. nintendo has been obsessed with puttin out silly peripherals in the past and it's only gotten worse on this console gen (worse as in more, the quality has actually been pretty good). I do think they should get a new console out soon though, the wii was a big hit a few years ago buy i think ppl who actually like playing games steadily have moved on to a diff console or PC.

and for u ppl jonesin for a Wii HD and some other form of super wii, have you not heard of emulators? namely, the Dolphin emu? It's to the point now where i can play almost all the wii/gc games that i loved (zelda, smash bros, mario kart, mario galaxy, etc) in sweet 1080p goodness, with an actual wiimote. get a ~3ghz+ quad and a GTX series card (or ATI equiv) and then google it, you're guaranteed to get faster and better results than you will wishing nintendo will get with it.

Dear Mr Miyamoto,
For the next Nintendo, I wish for:

HD gaming
A greater expanded online store
Streaming media capabilities (movies, music, internet, etc.)
A real controller
The classic gaming feel I grew up with

Bring back that feeling all gamers got playing titles like Super Mario 3, The Ocarina of Time, A Link to the Past, Star Fox 64, F-Zero, Pilotwings... the list can go on for quite some time.
Bring back that "gotta have it" feeling. Bring back that "one more level" feeling. Bring back Nintendo!

It would be amazing if they anounce their next portable console (DS 2). Nintendo will be using Nvidia hardware in their next system and it would be even more amazing if they were using the Tegra 2. I seriously doubt Nintendo would announce the successor to the Wii before the next DS. This is all just based on rumors (and the release dates of the previous consoles), but it's being said that Nintendo's next portable will be released by the end of the year. I've heard nothing, not even a rumor about the next Wii being released before 2011.

My bet is that, almost no1 here has even played on a Wii before, rofl.

I agree 100% with Restatement3dOfTed. I think that Sony and MS are using the old model getting the penny change out of Nintendo's "other possible market they once had".

Like it or not, Nintendo could do "hardcore games" (or whatever you wanna call them), but doesn't want to because the big bucks are on the other side of the road and they wanna keep it that way.

My other bet is that Sony and MS are going to that side of the road now with other offerings and Nintendo is gonna give hardcore (or eye candy lovers, actually) gamers out there a bone with it's next gen.

Cheers!

Really looking forward to Wii HD or whatever it ends up being called as I can't bring myself to play games like RE5 on the old control methods employed by PS3/Xbox360.

Oh and hardcore gamers own PC's.

Wannabee hardcore gamers own PS3/Xbox360.

Just my 2 cent as a PC and Wii fanboi :)

wish list??
a wii HD, so at least pretty graphics can distract us from the fact that we are just playing the same game over and over.

also, it's only game should be a high quality full 3D Pokemon MMO.

and all games can support keyboard and mouse as well as the controller, and there is NO "INNOVATIVE NEW" CONTROL MECHANISM! JUST GOOD GAMES!

and it's backwards compatible with all previous nintendo games, which can be upressed or flawlessly emulated to the way they were meant to be played, and it can make images of all of your old carts (so it has all the card sockets).

and it should also be a hand-held (so it can have a tv and controllers plugged into it). much like the DS, except with more side trigger buttons and two high res touch screens. of course this should also be backwards compatible with all hand-held Nintendo games the same as I mentioned for the console ones.

and it can support up to a million controllers. and patches are ILLEGAL, so every game has to be just perfect before it comes out, like the good ole days.

and it should be region free.

and all games are stored internally on the internal harddrive, which has a simple mirrored raid and can be easily backed up, upgraded ect like the PS3, games can still be bought on disks but are installed in entirety to the internal drives, and this process can be done in the background so you can do anything else while you're waiting, then there would be no loading screens because everything would be loaded off of a mirrored raid. of course games could also be bought via Digital distro, however it works like steam so you can just easily copy the files to another console and still have it work seamlessly.

and Nintendo should share their secrets with 3rd party developers so it's not just NINTENDO having success on their platforms.

and it should have a home-brew community, Nintendo takes 30% and approves games that go up. but otherwise free reign! free SDK! (just maybe a fee for submitting a game), Quality games only, they should keep it respectable, and devs keep IP!

this is good. we have two sources that there won't be a new console any time soon [iwata and reggie]. so we can see that the person who posted this article is dumb. however, we can also consider that they were paid by marketers to downplay their competitors.

Time will tell what they release.

Wii HD with DVD playback would be nice. They can keep the simple gfx, but maybe at least bump the gfx ability to better than PS2/XBox (original) yet under PS3/XBox360. More memory built in would be nice too, as well as a few more freebies in the Wii Channels built in. Wishful thinking perhaps.

Why not ask for a 3DFX Voodoo card whilst you are at it?

If your gonna wish then wish for something beyond what is currently available for PCs, which is exactly what Xbox did when the 360 came out.

1.I wish next wii would have better graphics,
2.LED based projector with hologram capabilities. Haha I know that's probably stretching it.
3.Better motion control.
4.Optional rom based plug in accesory for USB port so you can play your old Nintendo games such as NES,SNES & N64 without having to download them.
5.More memory
6Ability to download more plugins for better internet experience.
7.Backward compatibility with wii&GC games.
