Motorola Brings RAZR Back With Android and KEVLAR

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

The iconic RAZR is back, but this time it's smart.

The Motorola RAZR is a legendary phone. It is the highest-selling clamshell phone in history, and soon a phone with that same name will be arriving in November.

Motorola today announced the new RAZR, which will be known as the DROID RAZR in the U.S. market as a Verizon exclusive. It earns its name with the thin profile at 7.1 millimeters thick. Powering it is a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor.

Besides running on Verizon's CDMA network, the RAZR will also operate on GSM in Canada (on Rogers), Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Middle East and Africa starting this November.

Its design starts with a "hyper-vibrant" 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced qHD display, a KEVLAR fiber back (yes, that KEVLAR) and Corning Gorilla Glass to help the screen stand up to scratches and scrapes. What's more, every part of Motorola RAZR is protected by a splash-guard coating – even the electrical boards inside.

More specs:

•          Powered by Android 2.3.5, Gingerbread

•          1GB RAM for a fast user interface and multi-tasking

•          8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p HD video capture and image stabilization technology for crisp and clear videos

•          Front-facing HD camera for video chat over 4G LTE, 3G or Wi-Fi

•          4G LTE Mobile Hotspot capable so customers can share 4G LTE speed with up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices

•          Water repellent nanocoating protects the phone, and even the inside components, against everyday spills

•          Remote wipe, pin lock and government-grade encryption for email, calendar and contacts as well as voice and video chat conferencing

•          Use Quickoffice to view, create and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents on your mobile device from anywhere at anytime

•          Bluetooth 4.0 low energy

•          32 GB memory: 16 GB on board and 16 GB microSD card pre-installed (actual formatted capacity is less)

•          Powerful 1780 mAh battery

One customization that Motorola did on Android is the Smart Actions app that lets the user automate everyday tasks and enable better battery life. Smart Actions can turn down the ringer when you step into work, change the Bluetooth and GPS settings when you get home to save battery (through Wi-Fi network detection and geofences), or send a text to someone if you miss their call.

A great feature from the Motorola Atrix also lives in the RAZR with compatibility with the Motorola Lapdock 500 Pro or Lapdock 100 for a laptop-like experience. It can also connect to the HD Dock or HD Station to output to your home theater system.

See more on the new Motorola RAZR here at the product page, and stay tuned for more once we get our hands on one.

the original Razr sold so well because it was the perfect size and form factor. This is just a rip of the name - may be a very good phone, but it's not a Razr

Looks nice, too bad its on Verizon and I chose not to have my every movement tracked, packaged and sold.

LoL every phone provider does this. So basically you want a rotary phone?

After the RAZR came out, my wife bought an unlocked "RIZR" which was one of the first slide up phones and it was pretty sweet.

That God it has a good camera to make it easier for Verizon to spy on me.

Try a cup and string, it will fit nicely with your tin-foil hat

That wouldn't work either, because they'd know where you are the second you pick up the phone.

Now, now, the paranoid guy actually makes some really excellent points about privacy, civil liberties, the ability of the government-corporate-complex to spy on citizens for, I don't know... protesting government corruption by corporations, etc...

The only thing about that statement that really makes him nuts is that he thinks Verizon is the only one that does it.

Too bad this phone is on Verizon. I can't accept a carrier with such a crappy coverage area. In all the places I go I get far better reception from AT&T devices (NY Metro area from the City to 60 miles out).

Why did I have to bring up Firefox to submit a comment? IE9 has always worked up until now.

Ha wishful thinking, the 3 people that actually know and have heard of this phone will be happy to hear this news, the rest will buy a 4S. The way it is.

I was on a focus group a few months for what was obviously this phone. Its neat to see it come to fruition. Nice phone.

Wait, so KEVLAR backing and a Gorilla Glass face! This thing could probably stop or signifigantly slow down a bullet! I know Motorala has a reputation for making durable phones but this thing sounds like the tank of smart phones.

Nah. Defecation only happens at the moment of death, not after.

Sorry Verizon, I'm switching to Sprint.
