A Google April Fool is Made Real with Xbox Kinect

- By - Source : Engadget

The tech industry seems to take April Fool’s Day very seriously. Among the companies most guilty of indulging in a little holiday fun is Google. The search giant had a number of pranks going this year, the majority of them easily identifiable by how silly and unbelievable they were.

However, the folks over at USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) decided to go ahead and make Google’s gag Gmail feature, Gmail Motion, a reality. Using Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Kinect peripheral and their own Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit (FAAST), the boffins at ICT’s MxR Lab developed a way for users to control Windows applications and games using body motion. Combining this technology with Google’s idea for the Gmail Motion April Fool’s joke, the company came up with the Software Library Optimizing Obligatory Waving (SLOOW).

Simply put, it’s a working version of Gmail Motion. Open emails by mimicking opening an envelope or throw a thumb over your shoulder to reply to a mail.

Check out the two videos below:

This is doable with sign languages. I've seen experiments performed with VR gloves.

LOL - that's awesome, not because of what it does, but because how quickly they cranked it out.

actualy once you get passes the whole kinect and recognizing the body thing, it becomes fairly easy to make an application like this.
