Report: European Nexus One Has Multitouch

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

One German publication has gotten its hands on a Nexus One with multitouch.

Google's Nexus One phone launched last week and one of the questions asked was, "Will it ever have multitouch?" Google said it wouldn't rule it out but offered nothing further on the subject. However, it appears Europeans eagerly awaiting the release of the Nexus One can look forward to a multitouch version of the device.

Engadget reports a Nexus One being passed around German website, Heise has pinch zooming enabled. In response to a query on the Google Mobile Help forum, a Google employee said that the company is shipping the same Nexus One to the UK as it is in US and that phone does not include multitouch.

Hmm, so what phone does Heise have? Interesting stuff, indeed!

With all the new recent smart phones (Android) hype its good to see iphone has what looks to be some tough competition.

Once an update is released for it and we have root access (assuming that the vulnerability in the droid works for this as well) we will have roms of the European version with multi-touch enabled in no time.

So Europeans can pick any phone they want, any plan they want from any carrier, and now, nail in the coffin, multi-touch on a phone that is exactly the same as the one sold here? America's cell-phone market sucks...

I wonder if the exclusion in the US model is due to a patent issue...

We cannot pick any phone we want on any plan from any carrier. iPhone is locked to O2, Blackberry storm is locked to Vodafone (along with most of the other BBs), Pre is o2, HTC Hero is locked to Meteor, etc. Granted our plans are a little better but still not stellar.

Yeah, French law dictates that you can't sell goods dependent on a service. Eg, you can't force someone to buy butter if they want a loaf of bread. Smart people!

Mattfoo, it's partly the customers fault. Nokia tried to sell their own phones unlocked in US but were forced to shut down that business because nobody there wanted to buy unlocked phones for full price. I think it's because, for some reason, Americans perceive for example 179 USD + 79 per month in two years to be cheaper than 529 USD + any plan you want. In reality it's always a lot cheaper to buy a phone unlocked in the long run. Here in Sweden we usually can buy either a unlocked phone or a subsidized one with a plan. I always buy them unlocked.
