Forget iTunes: Film Fresh is now offering DivX version of Hollywood blockbuster movies that you can purchase, download, and play on any DivX compliant hardware.
There's good news for movie buffs currently locked in with Apple's iTunes service in order to get a quick fix: several major Hollywood movie studios are planning to sell their blockbusters movies in DivX format. This means that the films can be purchased, downloaded, and played back on DivX certified devices. Better yet, the movies can be transferred to DVD, USB drives, and SD memory cards. Consumers can even stream the movies over a home network.
According to the company press release, DTO (download to own) movie company Film Fresh will be the first to offer the movies online, providing films from major studios including Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, and more; independent studios will offer DivX versions of their movies as well. Currently Film Fresh offers Watchmen, Handcock (that name is just too funny), 17 Again, World Trade Center and lots more new and older titles.
The only drawback, at least for now, is that the movies are only available in standard definition (SD), and will range in price from $9.99 to $15.99. On the DRM end, the purchaser's user ID is embedded into the file, not locked onto one particular device, allowing owners to send the movie to the PlayStation 3 or another DivX certified hardware (LG, Philips, Toshiba products to name a few) once it's registered.

If they're trying to snag the people who would otherwise illegally download the movie, this is an epic fail attempt. First, $10-15 is overpriced for a direct download. There's no middle-man and no physical product to produce/ship, therefore the price should be closer to $5 for standard definition. Maybe $7 for high def. Anything over that, and you're not going to get many people to pay because they will think it's overpriced. I know I would.
Hancock.
are you thinking of the Will Smith movie? it's Hancock... as in John Hancock... jeeze...
You can barely rent a movie for $5 to $7 and you think they're going to sell you one at that price? It's actually about the same price as the other systems (like the PS3 store) charge to "own" your downloaded movie, the difference is that there is no DRM.
The movie name is Hancock, not the porn title of "Handcock".
"Handcock (that name is just too funny)"
Kevin, your a perv. It's not a freak circus it's a movie.

RedBox does it for $1 (thought I don't use it, it is quite popular).
Renting a DVD overday is 9 SEK, or about $1.30, at the local minimart.
DVDs are usually 3 for 99 SEK, or $4-5 per film.
Granted, these aren't the 'collector's edition' items but nor are the digital download versions likely to be.
I'd expect less that $4-5 for SD and no more than $10 for full HD, _now_. Anything more than that is highway robbery, given the lack of physical media and surrounding fluff.
That said, I approve of the DRM. I don't mind having my ID in there, as long as the software isn't crippled in any way.

sure they would. Ipod-lounge does it. Not trying to promote ipod-lounge or anything but if its done in the past then it can be done still.

the difference here is that you can actually play this on anything that handles DivX... as opposed to your ps3 solution that is tied to the ps3... lots of cheapo dvd consoles handle DivX these days and every PMP handles them just fine so this doesn't seem too bad of a deal tho i agree the price is just slightly too hy... sub 10 bux, as has been said, is ideal...

Ipod-lounge does it why can't they?
hmm.. sounds interesting.... but.... only SD... $10-$15 for a SD movie?..O.o hmmm... That sounds quite overproced to me. If is 1080p for $10-15... then I will think about it.

"why?"
"That doesn't matter"
If you want people to buy Digital Downloads then price them at a fair price.
Consumers are not getting a phyisical copy and there is almost no distribution cost, there is no 3rd party markup (Shops make about 30% on dvd/Cd sales) best still there are no dusty copies left on the shelf in 5 years no one wants.
£8.99 1080P Divx
£6.99 720P Divx
£4.99 480p DivX
I think at these prices then people might turn away from Piracy.
Um, walmart has dvd rental for $1 per dvd per day... that's 1/15 of the cost of this stupid new thing. You can watch this dvd fifteen times any day before matching the cost. God.
Apart from the price I like the look of this idea. Also bring in hi-def. Who want's standard definition any more?
If they start to make decent movies again, and stop prosecuting people for millions of dollars for sharing, and naturally put reasonable prices (like Havok2010 suggests), I might consider withdrawing from my boycott. They are sill flooding me with useless and subliminal commercials even inside the work supposed to be art called movie.
first thing came to my mind while reading it was 'is it 1st April?' ...nooo :-)

Red Box any one?
what a bunch of total BS this idea is.Just go out and buy a DVD or better yet buy yourself a used DVD, sticck the used DVD in your computer, rip it to wjhatever you need, and then download to to your player of choice via computer or a DVD Burned disc.
Hollywood sucks the big one !!!they must think we are all a bunch of idiots.they won't let us take the discs we go and buy to put on an IPOD or whatever.they now have specail SE editions with a "digital copy" which you would get anyways from a regular single disc version movie.
i am so sick of this bs and drm krap i swear io am just going to buy only foreign non us dvd or buy us used dvd keeping money away from these shyster studios.
Ill keep downloading for free. Good idea but to much lol. $2.00 Id pay $5 tops for HD.
It's HANCOCK
Kevin Parrish is a dumbass.
Thats funny, They can ripped the dvd and sell the divx for $10.00 - $16.00 so i can put it on my Home Theatre P.C., But when i buy the actual DvD for $19.00 - $26.00 It becomes Illegal for me to rip it and put it on my HTPC. And of course i would do a better quality conversion then Them.
Step in the right direction but an iTunes rental is still cheaper.
The price is simply too high.
Ever wonder why we have so much crap TV and poor movies these days? Part is that the producers can't get a a reasonable return. The TV audience is so fractured that a good series only gets a quarter of the audience a good show used to get. And with all the alternatives, most people will only shell out $10 to see a movie in theaters if it is a big blockbuster.
Meanwhile a lot of people pirate movies and shows and complain about the prices if its not free.
Why is $10 over priced? It cost $10 to see the movie at a threatre. On DVD or download - many people can see the same movie - making its cost per person just a fraction of the threatre price. What a bunch of whiney babies.
Go to boxofficemojo.com and see how many movies never make back their production cost - it is a small minority that break even or make money.
It won't endear me to you but I will say it again anyway - what a bunch of whiney babies - because that is just what many of you are.
oh thank god! we can now pay money for torrent quality movies!
Word for "the man":
It's not in the format, IT'S IN THE PRICE !!!!!
Get REAL !
Nobody wants to make you rich anymore, movie/music producers getting 100000000000000000000 $ for what they do is simply
- not
- justified
- any
- more .
"Handcock (that name is just too funny)" -> welcome to the new Tom's pr0n News!
The 2 things they got right are the no DRM and the embedded ID. At least you don't need a crippled device and the embedded ID is the assurance for studios that at least the provider tries to prevent piracy (though we know that it really doesn't do much).
Why is $10 over priced? It cost $10 to see the movie at a threatre.
Because bloody downloading it cannot cost as much as making a couple of thousand bucks copy and distributing it in theater, which will get half of those 10$.
And also because Tom Hanks got 51,000,000,00$ for his last movie it's hard to believe in "oh, we poor Hollywood" theory.
I guess price is pushed by the major publishers not to cannibalize traditional DVD market.
