WB Expands DVD to Blu-ray Upgrade Program
Warner Bros. is expanding its DVD2Blu program and lowering prices to boot.
Warner Brothers is expanding the company's DVD trade-in program that allows consumers to trade in standard definition movies and pay $10 to upgrade to the Blu-ray version of the same movie.
Announced in November, Warner's DVD2Blu program made things easier for folks looking to upgrade their existing DVD library to Blu-ray by offering them cheap rates for movies they already own. When it first began, the program had just 55 titles, but this week, Warner is expanding the approved list of movies to 85. It's still not huge, but hey, an extra 30 movies is an extra 30 movies, right?
Aside from the small bump in titles, WB is also lowering the cost of some upgrades. When the program started late last year, titles cost between $8 and $10 (along with the original copy of the movie). Now, the prices listed go as low as $5 (plus original copy) and the most expensive is $7.
In case you're wondering, the disks and packaging sent to WB are processed and used for future packaging.

They expect you to pay *more* for Speed Racer that for 2001 or Blazing Saddles?????

Just a minor correction for folks who might be interested, this program does not require you to mail in the packaging of the old movies; all you need is the old DVD.
Also, you get free shipping if you mail in about 7 of them at a time (spend $35 or more to upgrade). Unfortunately, you shouldn't expect to receive your new Blu-Ray movies for at least a month, but at least it ships faster than the sham-wow you bought on that infommercial!

But... I bought my sham-wow local...
Once the The Matrix hits that list, I'll send in all 3.
I only have troy on DVD so its not worth the cost of a blu-ray player. Maybe in the future they will expand this to include VHS and by then I may have a blu-ray player. I have Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Beetlejuice, The Fugitive, The Mask, and Eraser on VHS.
Why would I pay for movies that I already own just because is a different format? And on top of that most of this titles do not benefit from blu-ray. I said that this is a SCAM from WB.
Whoever bought 10,000bc on dvd wasted their money, what a joke. Really where is the matrix, I agree, I would send in all of those too.
If you can't tell the different between blu-ray and dvd that is your problem or you don't see well. I found two movies on the list that I have both for dvd and blu-ray and it is night and day if you have a lcd tv. Where for the picture tube set blends the image better.
Sounds like a good deal unless you have a spare HDDVD player around. You get BR quality for about $2.00 per disc online for almost all WB titles.

I doubt it. I imagine they would have already done something similar with VHS to DVD. I haven't used a VHS in years.

That assumes everyone buys DVDs for stories instead of some cheap action flick to play in the background every once in a while.
Be sure to read the program rules. I work for the military outside of the US, so I'm out. Anybody with a PO box is out. And then, since one big deal with BD is the added special features, when they say you might have fewer or zero special features that's bad. "Might be different aspect ratio" - like you send in wide and get back full-screen.
....do they accept HD-DVD as well for this?????
Not bad.
Teknomedic, the site you want is http://red2blu.com/
Looks exactly the same but it is for exchanging HD-DVD for Blurays. Also instead of sedning in the discs you only need to send in the cover art.
better hurry though that one expires June 20th, 2010
I never purchase dvd's so no upgrades for me. In addition, I very rarely rent dvd's.
This is a good program. Sure it costs money, but, at least it's minimal instead of making you fork out the entire purchase price of the blu ray after they already bought it once. The new model for video sales should hopefully be rights based, and not media based, hopefully that comes to pass some time.
This is nice, but I already got rid of all my dvd's

That all depends on what their source is. If it's from the master they can very well benefit from Blu-ray. If it's from the DVD and just upconverted there's little benefit.
Avatar's not on there? Looks to me like that would be one of the main selling ones.
do they exchange the dvds for new blu-ray or used BD discs ?

$4.95 each at red2blu.com to trade the cover art from your WB HD-DVDs for BR movies. You can get most of the HD-DVD discs for less than DVDs.
Those of us who bought HD-DVD players after Toshiba dropped the format have enjoyed many cheap movies over the last couple of years.

Where have you been for the last 10 years? I didnt know that people still had VHS'.
do they have a VHS trade in program as well? I got like 500 i don't want to throw out cuz i haven't bought them on dvd,,, then i'll upgrade my dvd collcection to blueray
do they have a VHS trade in program as well? I got like 500 i don't want to throw out
I've been fighting this battle with my girl having dozens of VHS movies she never watches. This trade up helps with some DVD versions I would have otherwise not upgraded. The incentives to upgrade to DVD or Bluray from VHS are already big enough that they don't need to lure us into it usually.
Avatar's not on there? Looks to me like that would be one of the main selling ones.
I'm guessing that most people who bought that already have it on bluray, if they wanted it. The dvd+bluray combo was only $24, so no reason not to buy that when it came out.
Avatar came out a couple weeks ago, why would you buy it on DVD if you have Bluray? To boot I think it's also available in a combo-pack so you would get both.
So I can ship a Get Smart Blu-Ray disk with $4.95, and in about a month they'll ship me back Get Smart on Blu Ray? Sounds like an incredible deal. I own maybe 20 of those movies, but I really don't see much benefit to upgrading to Blu Ray for most of them. Blazing Saddles in Blu-Ray? I never really watched that movie for the quality camera work.
This is ridiculous. Blue Ray is too expensive. No one is adopting it and on demand will render it obsolete. /end sarcasm
If you like any on the list, just go to your local pawn shop and you can buy used DVDs for $2.00. The $2.00 from the pawn shop and $4.95 for them is still cheaper that buying the BD new elsewhere. I have more than half on the list, but you are limited to 25 per household, so I'll have to pick which I would really want in Blu.
