BBC to Show Movie Shot Entirely by Chimps
The world's first movie shot entirely by chimps is set to air tomorrow night on the BBC.
Over the course a year and a half, Betsy Herrelko introduced the chimps in Edinburgh zoo to video technology. Herrelko taught the primates how to use a touch screen to select what kind of video they like watching the most. Given the choice between watching video from outside their enclosure, inside their food preparation room, the chimps didn't really seem that bothered. The BBC cites Betsy who say's she's not sure why they didn't prefer some video clips to others. The PhD student said it could be that the images shown were too familiar to the chimps or because they have no way of asking to see something different.
The next step was to give the group of 11 chimpanzees a chimpcam; a video camera housed in a chimp-proof box. On top of this box was a display that showed live images of whatever the camera happened to be pointing at. The chimps soon became interested in the chimpcam, carrying it around their enclosure and watching the images on the viewing screen change.
Although the chimps didn't seem to know they were actually recording anything and according to the Beeb, didn't show any interest in filming each other, the British Broadcasting Corporation will air Chimpcam tomorrow night (January 27) at 20:00 GMT.

Be right back, gotta unstrap the camera from my dog's head.
Wow. I'm almost speechless. Who comes up with these ideas?!
Monkey see monkey do...... What a waste..... Don't we already do stuff like this with cameras???
We don't seem to know what we are actually recording.
Look at the shows that are on TV now.
Sounds like monkey business to me...
They could also put a camera on a tree branch and claim "The world's first movie shot entirely by a tree is set to air tomorrow night on the BBC." Unless the chimps also do the editing and post-production then it's just a publicity stunt for BBC to get into the some world record book.
couldn't be any worse than an Uwe Boll flick.....
is this somehow related to 1 million monkeys and 1 million typewriters and one will come up with a play equal to Shakespeare?
no if we all looked like chimps i would not film eachother either!

BBC reporters locked up in jail with chimps due to hustle.
What's the difference between this and the story of the kid in the blimp that flew away. Or bigfoot... A seven year old picasso a 9 year old computer guru. Maybe it's the latest thing to to influence people in making them feel less worth "anyone can do it" and let them pay their taxes.
I didn't know that the new Twilight movie was coming out so soon...
I didn't know the new Twilight movie was coming out so soon...
Enough monkeying around!
Actually, I thought Fox Television was already doing this for their main lineup.
The next step in reality TV. Move out of the way project runway!
i think it would be intrestining for a variety of reasons. For one i think it would provide huge insight into how the chimps immitiately percieve reality. they were aware that what they pointed the camera at was apearing on the monitor so whatever was recorded was what they were intrested in at the time. I wonder how long thier attention can be sustained for; what individual observations they make about an object, ect.
Hooray for yesterday's BBC news...
the monkeys not only shot a movie, they made it into a documentary complete with narration recounting how Betsy Herrelko, the PhD student, was trying to bull$hit her way to a PhD degree by giving monkeys a bunch of cameras and call it a thesis
Tom's should really just link to http://news.bbc.co.uk/
Sorry for the double post.

next stop: installing tiny cameras on mice to see which brand of cheese they like
I will fully support it if it helps in any way to get american idol off TV.
Oh, so its Jersey Shore the movie?
Anyone who ever had trouble turning the Record feature on/off on their camera knows what "chimpcam" records....
Haven't they been doing this for years... I think they call it "Reality TV"?
I call shenanigans!!!
(I think it's a cool idea... and I wonder if the Chimps will eventually figure out that they can take video of something and watch it later)
adaman, simply do what I do - don't watch. Worst comes to worst, there's alway History and Discovery Channels.
wauv..chimps behind the camera....
that really explains most of Steven Seagals movies..
This isn't new, Youtube has been around for years...
Thats BBC at its best nowadays, wasting license money on some pointless show. At least years ago they also provided some reliable information, now they only do pointless shows
This is nothing more than Chimp reality TV. The new wave of family entertainment.
