Avatar Beats Dark Knight's Blu-ray Sales Records
James Cameron's Avatar has broken Blu-ray sales records previously held by The Dark Knight.
Variety cites retailers and sources close to the studio that say as of Sunday afternoon, Avatar had sold 6.7 million copies in North America alone. Of that 6.7 million, 2.7 million were on Blu-ray, shattering the record held by The Dark Knight, which took 18 months to sell 2.5 million copies. Avatar surpassed The Dark Knight on the first-day sales.
While it's not heard to imagine Avatar doing really well in DVD and Blu-ray sales, it's quite extraordinary to hear that people were queuing up in the cold to buy the movie. London's Daily Mail reports that many UK stores opened at midnight to sell the DVDs to waiting fans and a spokesman for music, movie and game retailer HMV said they expect Avatar to be one of the biggest selling DVDs of all time. He also pointed to the surge in Blu-ray sales. Speaking to the Mail, Gennaro Castaldo said, "What's really significant is that more than half of these sales are on Blu-ray rather than DVD - which would be the first time that any film release has been more successful on the new hi-definition format."
This is just sales for the basic, no frills version of the movie. Expect Fox to release a special edition later in the year and a 3D version sometime in 2011.

the story was cliche... people are convinced that this is a revolutionary movie, but only the visuals were revolutionary.
this movie should be watched in 3d only, and it's better if you're stoned. i'm just sayin.
Happy to see that blu-ray is finally becoming a more accepted standard... was about time!
.... and it's better if you're stoned. i'm just sayin.
Your location is New York, so you are not supposed to be getting stoned in the first place...
on the other hand, I'm dutch, so I encourage it!
And when the Deluxe edition, and Special Edition, and 3D Edition come out I'm sure sales will be just as good. Ah, the life of James Cameron. I'd imagine his house looks like the mansion from Duck Tales, complete with gold coin pool.
I purchased it on blu-ray. Quality was outstanding!!
The script and story-line was fun yet average. Overall very good movie due to the out of this world visuals.
For anyone thinking Britain fails at math, the article states that North American sales were 6.7 million and of that 2.7 million were on Blu-Ray. This article didn't give figures on UK sales, which I believe is what the quoted man was talking about (Giving him the benefit of the doubt here).
My Walmart had the BD and DVD together for $15.99. Can't go wrong there. I kept the BD and gave the DVD to my parents.
Still don't have a blu-ray player, still don't see the point.
I only see a quality change once you hit the 32" mark on screens, and I still have my old 24" Sony Trinitron CRT. Love it, feel no need to upgrade.
Glad to see the format is finally becoming more mainstream though, maybe someday I'll buy a Blu-Ray drive for my PC.
But then again... all of this is coming from a guy who still uses broadcast TV, and owns a total of 3 movies on DVD & 7 on VHS.
Are you kidding me? Avatar was the best movie ever. Since I watched it I shaved my 3 cats bald and had them all tattooed blue.

The movie scores on a sheer technical level alone.

I would like to know which movies you possess

As long as you didn't do that to yourself, you are still sadly considered normal by some...
DVD, I don't have Blu-Ray yet, I have HDDVD... Fail.
Avatar was so weak from a storytelling/writing standpoint. I don't understand the point in watching this movie in 2D.

so your movie is only 1 dimension higher than the 1D characters and plot.
hence more enjoyable experience as you don't have the distracting separation of 2 dimensions between visuals and character personalities.

you poor boy,
I'm with you though, still have not upgraded my $15 DVD drive.
Avitar is hands down the greatest movie ever produced, anyone who dissagree's needs to go get there eyes and minds checked by a physician. The movie has it all, awsome visuals, Adventure, drama, Love Story, what more could you possibly ask for??????? Can't wait for the sequel..........

If the story telling was so week, I don't think the movie would be as popular as it is. I love special effects, but I think the story and the acting was great.
I think, that the people who say the acting wasn't that good, are just too damn picky. I think the acting can be judged by the majority of the people. As acting is rated by opinions, and majority opinion rules.
On a side note, my best friend said the movie wasn't that great, but he bought the blue ray the first day it came out. Go figure.
lol the new BD+ was cracked by Sunday.

-Get a 60$ internal BR drive.
-Rent
-Rip to ISO.
-????
-Profit!
I pissed off my wife and bought the DVD/Blu-Ray combo, and a BLu-Ray player for $100 at Costco. Visually stunning, and it upconverts my DVDs so they look a bit better. I've been waiting for the players to hit the $100 mark, now just get the movies to come down to DVD prices and I'm a happy camper.

The same could be said for Star Wars. Avatar was a good show.
Are you kidding me? Avatar was the best movie ever.
I feel sorry for you.
Avatar is a scifi, extraterrestrial version of Pocahontas. While a good movie the story line is dated. The special effects were great and it was very well done but the story line IS weak from the stand point that it's nothing new.
With that said, I still loved the movie and bought it on BluRay the first day it was released and have watched it twice since. There is so much to see in the movie that I pick up little details every time I watch it again.

COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!!
there is no doubt about the success of the movie, the gross tells it, the DVD and bluray sales left no doubts.
I can't believe that I watched this movie 12 times in IMAX, and about 6-7 times a downloaded DVDSCR version.
Can't wait to get my hands on the bluray version, and then the 3D version, of course after I buy a 3D capable TV!
uhh! wanna know how james feel right now! happiness of course.
In other news, the Wayans brothers are currently pushing their Avatar spoof straight to DVD, hoping for a summer release. Look for "Avatard" this July!

I would but there is no good reason for me to do so!
Blu ray drive here in Bahrain is about 50 BD --> $130
Can only buy blu-ray discs here, no renting, and they also cost a heap.
wish this place was a bit more caught up on tech, I had to import my phenom 2...

Greatest movie ever produced?
I think you may need your mind checked for that statement alone.
The numbers are staggering! The revenue is unbelieveable!
Loved the movie. Just don't understand why the Blu-ray came with a dvd. I gave the DVD to a friend.
Not surprised it sold well. After all, there were special displays setup for it right by the tabloids.
Why buy? Rent!
C'mon. How many times are you going to watch it? It's not like it's Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I can't stand blu-ray. I dropped it from my netflix subscription because almost every new title had issues. (though its most likely the fault of Cyberlink and WinDVD [got em both] and their shoddy programming for Vista x64) I kinda wish HD-DVD made it (but with a name with less syllables)
This was to be expected.
