Spin Master just one-upped its hatchable T-Rex — I got an exclusive first look at Hatching Megalodon

Last year at Toy Fair, Spin Master unleashed Primal Hatch. The videos I posted across Tom’s Guide’s socials racked up millions of views, which didn’t surprise me. I mean, who wouldn’t stop to watch a baby T-Rex with glowing eyes hatch from an egg? For 2026, I’m excited to reveal that Spin Master is leaning into success with a new shark-themed hatchable called Hatching Megalodon.

Ahead of Toy Fair 2026, I met with Spin Master virtually for another round of hatching fun. I knew the brand would be showing off something big to follow the epic T-Rex, but I had no idea just how delighted (and scared, slightly) I’d be through a screen.

Here’s the Hatching Megalodon setup: the actual Megalodon comes in a tank-like container, with a fill line for two liters of water. It’s super simple to prepare, just fill the container, and then the surprise is underway.

There’s a tab that, when pulled, releases a red foaming mix-in. It causes the water to turn this bright, almost theatrical “shark attack” red while fizzing and bubbling. You can see the Megalodon start to wake inside its egg, and then… bam!

A menacing 16-inch Megalodon pops up straight up, more than twice the height of its egg, and stares right back at you with glowing red eyes. I promise, even over a video, it’s frightening in the best kind of way. Like, I’m pretty sure I squealed out loud.

Unlike the one-time hatch of the T-Rex from last year’s Primal Hatch, this Megalodon’s jump scare is repeatable. There’s a spring system inside the toy that lets you push it back into the egg, compress it and hatch it again and again.

I got jump-scared by a toy shark over video — I can only imagine the chaos when kids see it hatch in person.

In addition to the hatching mechanism, the Megalodon provides some touch-activated games. Dare to put your finger near its mouth? Go for it, but beware the consequences. That jaw is motorized for mischievous chomping (obviously, of the finger-safe nature.)

There’s a scar on its head that’s touch interactive, meaning it’ll react if you poke it. When you squeeze it, it makes those classically-eerie, underwater shark sounds.

Shark toys are totally having a moment. Hatching Megalodon honors that while feeling like a natural evolution of what Primal Hatch started. Last year, the T-Rex made waves online. Now, the Megalodon takes that excitement and adds an extra bite... literally.

I personally can’t wait to see kids’ faces when they finally meet this thing in person. I was jump-scared through a screen, so I can only imagine the reaction in real life.

Hatching Megalodon is launching in Amazon and Target in July, and Walmart in August, for $49.99, rated for ages 5 and up.
