Samsung's VR Headset Tipped To Cost Nearly $2k, Still Less Than The Apple Vision Pro

We may have pricing and a release date for Samsung's Project Moohan headset thanks to a new report. If it proves true it means the Android XR headset is coming soon, but it won't be cheap—even if it does cost less than the Apple Vision Pro.

The report comes from Korean publication Newsworks (via 9to5Google) and asserts that the VR headset will be available for purchase (in Korea at least) starting October 13. A previous report from a different Korean publication stated that Samsung will hold an Unpacked event on September 29 in South Korea that will focus on the headset.

Outside of the potential release date, Newsworks also claims to know potential pricing and it reportedly ain't cheap.

Newsworks claims Project Moohan will cost between 2.5 and 4 million won, which would be roughly about $1,800 and $2,900 USD. Even at the high end it would still be cheaper than Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro, but only barely.

How it compares to other headsets

Here's the rub though: Anything over $1,000 for a device even Google calls an "episodic product" that you only wear for an hour or two at a time can be a tough pill to swallow.

The current king of VR headsets, the Meta Quest 3 and its little sister the Quest 3S are 4x cheaper than the rumored Moohan price at $499.99 and $299.99, respectively. And they offer comparable functionality to Apple's headset (albeit without the deep Apple software integration) at a much cheaper price.

Even the rumored Valve "Deckard" VR headset that could launch this year reportedly has pricing closer to $1,200 while running on SteamOS. That headset is reportedly going to be able to play non-VR games, but in VR on a big screen without a PC.

If Samsung's competition is the Vision Pro then anything less than $3,000 is probably a win—but if it's trying to get people into VR headsets, the current pricing rumors don't paint an enticing picture.

Samsung and Android XR

Samsung is reportedly only planning to sell 100,000 Moohan headsets before the end of 2025. At the same time, a number of rumors have indicated that Samsung is working on a pair of smart glasses that will launch in 2026 offering models with and without displays.

Meanwhile, Samsung will have Android XR competition in Xreal's wild Project Aura glasses. Those spectacles are also supposed to debut next year and may be more affordable than Project Moohan since the currently available Xreal One Pro AR glasses top out at $649.
