Subscriptions to the best streaming services have a sneaky way of piling up on your monthly bill. For example, I subscribed to Peacock to watch the Super Bowl last month, but really haven't taken advantage of it much since.
Between Netflix, Disney+, Max, Apple TV+, Prime Video and a few others, it’s easy to spend more than $80 or even $100 a month without thinking much about it. And that's my problem: All of the monthly memberships come out of my account at different times and when I think about canceling, I get distracted and another month goes by.
That got me wondering: could AI actually help decide which subscriptions are worth keeping and which ones to cancel — and then handle the task itself?
With the rise of AI agents capable of browsing the web and completing tasks, it’s becoming possible for tools like ChatGPT to do more than just answer questions. They can start helping with everyday digital chores.
So I decided to test it. Here's how it went.
Step 1: Asking ChatGPT which services to cancel
First, I gave ChatGPT a list of shows I like and what my family watched. Then, I asked ChatGPT which streaming services I should cancel based on what we actually watch and any similar shows that might be coming to any given streaming service.
I honestly wasn't taking advantage of all of the streaming services — often not even opening some for more than a month. I was wasting money and knew ChatGPT could help. It told me to cancel Peacock. I decided to cancel it and Netflix, too.
Then I used its agent-style capabilities to help carry out those cancellations.
Using ChatGPT Agent to cancel services
Once ChatGPT recommended which subscriptions to cancel, I moved on to the second part of the experiment: using ChatGPT Agent to actually cancel those subscription. Instead of manually searching for instructions, I asked ChatGPT to guide me through the process.
If I were to navigate to each site manually, I might get distracted by the upcoming shows or trailers. By using ChatGPT Agent, I was sure to complete the task and actually follow through.

My follow-up prompt was simple: “Help me cancel Netflix and Peacock subscriptions.”
From there, ChatGPT walked through the steps required to cancel each service.
It identified the correct account settings pages, explained where the cancellation options were located and guided the process step by step. Because streaming services require secure logins, I still had to sign in and confirm the cancellations myself. But the AI handled the navigation instructions and made it easy to move quickly through the process.
What worked — and what didn’t
In practice, ChatGPT didn’t fully cancel the subscriptions autonomously. That's a good thing and shows that the security restrictions on streaming platforms are in place. They require a human user to log in and confirm billing changes manually.
But the AI still proved useful in a few ways. First, it helped analyze which services were actually worth canceling rather than making random cuts. Second, it streamlined the cancellation process by quickly surfacing the exact steps needed for each platform without ever needing to leave the chat.
Instead of searching the web for multiple help pages, I could manage the entire process in a single conversation.
How to try it for yourself
If you want to try something similar, you can start with this prompt:
Prompt to try: “Here are the streaming services I currently subscribe to and their monthly prices: [list them]. Which ones should I cancel temporarily if I want to save money but still have enough content to watch?”
Once ChatGPT makes recommendations, you can ask it to guide you through the cancellation steps.
The takeaway
The biggest takeaway from this experiment wasn’t simply canceling a couple of streaming services — it was the strategy behind it. ChatGPT pointed out something many people overlook: you don’t have to keep every streaming subscription active all the time.
By rotating services throughout the year — keeping core platforms like Netflix or Prime Video while temporarily pausing others until new shows arrive — it’s possible to significantly reduce your monthly streaming bill. Depending on your lineup, that approach could easily save $20 to $50 per month.
AI agents aren’t quite ready to manage subscriptions entirely on their own yet. But tools like ChatGPT can already help analyze your spending, recommend which services to pause and guide you through the cancellation process.
If your streaming subscriptions have started piling up, asking AI for a quick review of your lineup might be one of the easiest ways to trim your monthly bill.
