I get a kick out of asking ChatGPT all sorts of loaded questions that I’ve already presented to actual humans.
On the topic of hobbies, people have recommended activities that align with my personality type and interests. My passionate nerdom for various forms of entertainment, sports and literature has led me to adopt some obvious hobbies suggested by my closest friends and family. Then I thought to myself one day, “I wonder what hobbies ChatGPT would propose to me after I gave it my personality and interests?”
Looking for new activities to enjoy that could become regular pursuits during my weekend escapades was the mission I embarked on, with that aforementioned question in mind. With that prompt, ChatGPT listed out a bunch of common and quirky hobbies that match my persona, interests, energy levels and availability.
Article continues belowHere’s how that process went and which hobbies I decided to pick up.
Prompting to find new fun things to do
Remember how I mentioned my penchant for asking loaded questions? Check out this equally loaded prompt I used with ChatGPT (I was as overly detailed as you’d expect):
Act as a creative lifestyle strategist and behavioral psychologist. Based on the information I provide about my personality, interests and how I spend my free time, suggest 15–20 unique hobbies I likely haven’t considered before.
For each hobby:
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
Explain why it fits my personality
Describe what makes it interesting or unconventional
Include a low-effort way to try it this weekend
Rate it on a scale of 1–10 for how well it matches me
Also include a mix of:
Social and solo hobbies
Indoor and outdoor options
Creative, physical, intellectual, and slightly weird ideas
Here’s my profile: I'm part introvert, part extrovert, am into anime, love playing video games, regularly read books, watch professional wrestling, enjoy listening to varied genres of music and tend to have high energy levels on the weekend.
ChatGPT initially responded to my huge request by acknowledging my personality traits as a “great mix of curiosity and cozy introversion.” It then went on to list a varied list of 18 hobbies that combined narrative and immersion (since I’m prone to not just enter worlds, but consume them), am prone to energy spikes during the weekend, bask in chill vibes and dabble in activities that are a creative combination of my favorite things.
Hobbies I never considered…until now
Out of the 18 hobbies ChatGPT suggested, four of them stood out to me as the ones worth trying out. The outline for each activity stated why it fits my personality type, what makes it unconventional, how I should engage in the hobby itself and a final score based on how much it matches up with my interests:
- Story-driven solo RPG journaling: You like anime, games, and books—this merges all three into a personal narrative experience. You play a game by writing it, making choices like a protagonist. Use a free system like “journaling RPG prompts” + a notebook. Start as a wandering anime-style hero. 10/10.
- Creative 'what if' scenario writing: Imagination and fandom crossover. Mashups like “What if wrestlers had anime powers?” Write one absurd crossover scenario. 10/10.
- Character voice acting practice: Anime and expressive energy. You casually train voice acting like a game. Record yourself voicing 3 different characters. 9/10.
- 'Concept album' life planning: Music lover and narrative thinker. You design phases of your life like albums with themes, moods, and titles. Name your current “era,” pick 5 songs that define it, and write a 3-line concept. 9/10.
With these four proposals, I now have four diverse hobbies to choose from during my weekend free time.
As someone who basks in creative writing, has a brain wired for video game-like scenarios, mimics the voices of my favorite characters and loves coming across new music, those four hobbies spoke to my soul.
I did find one of the chatbot’s other activity recommendations to be a bit strange, however. The one I’m alluding to, entitled “Solo Cafe Observation Writing,” suggested I sit by myself in a cafe and write three fictional backstories about three random patrons. The creep factor attached to that activity was too high for me on that one.
Final thoughts
My repeated experiments with ChatGPT always yield some expected and unexpected results. Asking the chatbot to offer me some new hobbies to embrace while also detailing my personality and interests resulted in me finding new ways to mix up my favorites and enjoy them in fun new ways.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to brush up on my Cell (from Dragon Ball Z) impersonation as I pursue my dream of becoming an in-demand anime voice actor.
