I have a million and one hobbies.
Spending hours on a video game, getting immersed in a book, queuing up my next binge-worthy anime or vibing out to a new album from one of my favorite artists are the main pastimes that put me in a great mental space. But there are times when I’m not in the mood for any of those activities and end up looking for something out of the ordinary to engage in.
I remember my days as a child, just killing time by playing with all manner of toys like the Magic 8-Ball, Slinky and remote-controlled cars. As an adult, I wanted to re-experience the wonder of those nostalgic good times by turning ChatGPT into my new personal “smart toy.”
Article continues belowAs my go-to chatbot, I use it for practical advice, fresh music playlists and structured to-do lists, I decided to switch up my ChatGPT methods by using 12 prompts to transform it into my latest electronic plaything.
Feel free to use these ChatGPT prompts at your leisure to learn something new or just see what out-of-the-box responses it generates.
Riddles, trivia and a text-based RPG
One of the best prompts I used to switch up ChatGPT’s personality into a fun game master is this one: Act like a mischievous AI toy that challenges me with riddles.
The chatbot digitally rubbed its hands together and transformed into a cunning riddle master. It set out three specific rules to abide by: no Googling (I’ll know…probably), answer before asking for a hint and if you get three right, I level up the difficulty.

I’ll admit to initially not having the smarts to know the answer to the first riddle ChatGPT presented me with: I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I? Racking my brain trying to come up with the correct response didn’t frustrate me, however. It only made me work harder to finally arrive at an answer (it’s an “echo”). And with that answer, ChatGPT awarded me a point and continued to get my brain gears turning with increasingly difficult riddles.
These five additional prompts also did a great job of turning ChatGPT into the perfect cure for boredom:
- Challenge me with increasingly harder trivia until I fail
- Let’s play a word association game, but get progressively more absurd
- Teach me something random in under 2 minutes, then quiz me
- Play 20 questions with me and guess what I’m thinking
- Act as a game master and run a mini text-based RPG for me
Those five prompts stayed in the realm of playing a game with ChatGPT that could also work in a real-time setting with willing participants. Making the time pass quickly without even realizing it became a regular occurrence with these ChatGPT smart toy commands.
Turning my current mood into a playable game and playful predictions
I stuck with ChatGPT to see what other types of fun game situations it could create for me based on my prompts. With the next list of six prompts, I got hours of playtime out of the chatbot as it produced playable scenarios that resulted in fun back-and-forth conversations:
- Create a choose-your-own-adventure story where I’m the main character
- Act like a sarcastic robot toy that roasts my answers to simple questions
- Act like a puzzle box toy that only reveals answers if I solve clues
- I’m feeling [mood] right now. Turn my current mood into a mini game
- Let’s play a word association game, but get progressively more absurd
- Pretend you’re a futuristic toy that can predict my day — but with a twist
The mood-based minigame ChatGPT created for me was attached to my feeling of being overjoyed. It came up with something clever called “Joy Overflow,” an amusing time killer that tasked me with setting my current “Joy Meter” from 1-10, having 60 seconds to fulfill two missions to gain an extra point and acquire two points by completing a particular challenge.
Sending an unexpectedly nice message to someone, thinking of my happiest memory, then describing it in one sentence and turning my joy into a creative idea ended up being more fun than I expected.
The takeaway
Prompting ChatGPT to help me with my tasks themed around my professional life, location suggestions and productivity goals are my go-to uses for it.
But I also got plenty of mileage out of prompting ChatGPT to become the interactive smart toy that surprised me with the types of fun games it developed. Active chats that embrace a playful vibe with ChatGPT are worth experimenting with and taking out into the real world for some ice-breaking conversations and friendly hangouts.
