DuckDuckGo has added AI image generation — here's how to use it

DuckDuckGo just added AI image generation, and it's brilliant. While tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Gemini, and Leonardo AI have dominated the AI image generation space, DuckDuckGo now offers its own image creation tool. This means you can generate custom images on the fly while you're already using DuckDuckGo for searches.

The feature is free, easy to use and takes mere minutes to learn. If you've been curious about AI image generation but haven't tried it yet, or if you're already using other tools, DuckDuckGo's new option is worth exploring. Here's how to start generating AI images right now.

1. Log into DuckDuckGo

Start by navigating to DuckDuckGo and clicking Duck.ai — this takes you directly to the AI image generator. You don't need a DuckDuckGo account to use the feature, making it immediately accessible to anyone who wants to try it.

2. Click "New Image" to start generating

On the left-hand side of the DuckDuckGo interface, you'll see a "New Image" button. Click this to open the AI image generation tool. This brings up a prompt box where you'll describe the image you want to create.

3. Describe your image and generate it

In the prompt box, type a description of the image you want to create. Be as specific or as general as you like — the AI responds to both simple requests like "a sunset over mountains" and detailed descriptions like "a watercolor painting of a Victorian house with a red door surrounded by autumn leaves."

Once you've written your prompt, click the arrow button to generate the image. The AI will process your request and create an image based on your description within seconds.

4. Refine your image with follow-up prompts

After your initial image generates, you can make changes by entering additional prompts. Describe what you'd like to adjust — for example, "make the sky more purple" or "add a person walking in the foreground."

The AI will modify the existing image based on your new instructions rather than starting from scratch. This iterative process lets you fine-tune the image until it matches your vision.

You can continue making adjustments with as many follow-up prompts as needed.

5. Download your finished image

Once you're happy with the generated image, saving it is simple. Click the arrow icon underneath the image and it will automatically download to your device. The image saves to your default downloads folder, ready to use however you need.

Keep in mind that the free tier has daily usage limits, so you can only generate a certain number of images per day. If you hit the limit, you'll need to wait until the next day to create more images.
