16. Conclusion

The handwriting-recognition software integrated in Windows XP Tablet PC as well as the pen-based operating system will be selling points for a lot of people. The handwriting recognition is particularly revolutionary. However, prolific writers will tend to prefer the keyboard over the pen, since not even the best handwriting recognition can compete with the speed of typing.

For the Tablet PC concept to be successful on a grand scale, there will have to be more software applications that support Tablet PC features over the medium term. Vertical markets offer the greatest potential for the Tablet PC and will presumably be the fastest to come up with adapted applications.

However, we don't think it's worthwhile for private individuals to switch from a good sub-notebook to a Tablet PC. But if you're considering buying a new notebook, you should definitely take a closer look at the Tablet PCs.

While the operating system is cutting-edge, the hardware is somewhat underwhelming. The viewing angle is much too narrow, while the displays themselves are not bright enough for the many different environments in which the Tablet PC is intended to be used.

The model we tested, Acer's Travelmate C102Ti, has virtually every feature, including WLAN, that users expect from a modern notebook. This device is an excellent example of the new Tablet PC breed. Considering the small capacity of the battery, battery rundown time is very good. However, the computer does not perform as well as modern notebooks: PC100-SDRAM and a graphics solution with only 8 MB video RAM are just a tad old-fashioned. Nonetheless, for $2200, the Travelmate C102Ti is a good, cheap and elegant entry-level Tablet PC.
