Seagate has now announced the second generation Momentus, called the Momentus 5400.2. And there is more to come, as Seagate has already announced a 7200 RPM Momentus drive.
There was one little surprise in our test: the Momentus was beaten in the application benchmark Winbench 99 2.0 by the newcomer from Western Digital. The Scorpio managed to beat the 5400.2 both in the Business and the High End parts of this benchmark. However, when it comes to access times and raw data transfer performance, Seagate manages to beat the Scorpio. In addition, Seagate is able to offer up to 100 GB of storage in this drive, while the WD Scorpio remains at 80 GB.
In SYSmark 2004, the benchmark results of the new Momentus 5400.2 fluctuate somewhat. This is likely caused by an early firmware version on the test drive. Aside from that small problem, we feel Seagate did a great job in improving an already good product, and has a strong foothold in the 5,400 RPM segment.
