6. Hitachi TravelStar DK23FA-80 / TravelStar 4K80 - 80 GB

At 95 g (3.35 oz) the DK23FA-80 is slightly lighter than most other drives. It is also not one of the new models, and only runs at 4,200 RPM. As a result, most benchmark numbers for this drive are not very good. That is particularly the case for IOMeter and Winbench 99 2.0. In SYSmark 2004, this drive (also sold as the TravelStar 4K80) manages to score acceptable results.
We measured a maximum data transfer rate of 30 MB/s which we consider too low today. We'd rather recommend going for the TravelStar 5K80 or other 5,400 RPM drives. Hitachi seems to have a similar opinion on drive performance, as its new 100 GB model will be the TravelStar 5K100, running at 5,400 RPM - the manufacturer does not intend to offer another 4,200 RPM drive.
