LG Wants Sale of PS3 Consoles Blocked in U.S.
It's a patent fight between Sony Corp and LG Electronics, with the possible banning of PlayStation 3 sales as a result.
Bloomberg reports that Seoul-based LG Electronics Inc has asked the International Trade Commission (ITC) in Washington to block the sale of PlayStation 3 consoles and Sony Bravia HDTVs in the United States.
LG filed two complaints on February 4, one claiming that the Sony Bravia HDTVs infringe on four patents (#2785). The second complaint was focused on Sony Blu-ray players--including the PlayStation 3 console--that allegedly infringe on four other LG patents (#2786).
"The patents in the TV case relate to high-definition receivers, and receiving and processing signals," Bloomberg reports. "The Blu-ray patents are for a way of dealing with multiple data streams, such as different camera angles, as well as a system to reproduce data that’s stored on a read-only device."
Although the ITC has the power to block imports or products that violate U.S. patents, the ITC cannot order financial damages. Thus, LG has brought its two complaints to a federal court in the state of California. LG is now seeking a cash compensation of an unspecified amount for the unauthorized use of its inventions.
The two current LG complaints are in retaliation against Sony Corp who previously filed similar complaints against LG back in December. Sony claimed that LG mobile phones infringe on seven Sony patents (337-758), and thus sparked an investigation by the ITC. The phones listed in the complaint included the Lotus Elite, Neon, Remarq, Rumor 2 and Xenon.
Sony also filed a separate civil lawsuit (10cv9967) in December regarding LG's Blu-ray players in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles.

Stop PS3 sales? LG is crazy.
another patent war....im surprised apple hasn't jumped in....
LOL. No wonder we're progressing so slowly
I am of the notion that if patents were actually violated, they would have sued long ago. Somebody just wan'ts some money. But at the end of the day, I don't care PC FTW!
I guess their doing this just to delay each other.
I own both a PS3 and LG 47" LED HDTV for both console gaming. My next HDTV purchase will be a 3D purchase and Sony, LG, and Samsung are pretty much what I'll be choosing from.
I think I'll tell both Sony and LG to go F themselves and buy a Samsung HDTV to match the three Samsung LCD monitors I use for PC gaming. Let the children have their spat by themselves on the government playground of patents.
doesnt LG know that if they block PS3 sales in the US a big ruccuss will form, people will know that LG is at fault for the ban, and the news will spread that LG is the bad guy, and people will start hating LG and not buy their products. Thats basic common sense.
I use your patents, you use mine and we all get along. Seems like an awful waste of money on both sides. Since both aren't american companies, let them pay all the court fees an US lawyers all they want and help jump start the american economy. :-)
I love how patents can be created for simplistic methods to do something, as if no one else on this entire planet would ever come up with the same method them fuc***** selves...patents should be saved for ACTUAL inventions, not god damned methods ffs...I should patent the precise method on how I prepare my hamburgers, then sue anyone who puts on the same toppings.

Someone already claim that she owned the Moon, asking people for money, and "strange" enough that someone really paid her for it.
so patents are nothing. Really nothing.
forgot to say, she also said she is the owner of the SUN, and asking everybody to pay her.
Apparently LG doesn't like the idea of Sony using serial codes, either.
Stop PS3 sales? How can you stop something that doesn't exist?
LG: I'll raise your patents by $5. SONY: I'll reraise your patents by $10! etc etc etc until you get to 1 bazillion kachinkas. W.G.A.S!
Stop PS3 sales? How can you stop something that doesn't exist?
.. I don't get it.
...and LG has just made it's way onto my "Do not buy products from ..." list. Before any of you point this out, Sony has been on there a couple of times as well.
...
Well, Rambus sells memory to Sony, so where there's a connection to Rambus, there's going to be some sort of litigation. I'm surprised Rambus hasn't sued LG for using memory of some sort in their phones, and then sued the ITC, just because they're there, and Rambus has proven very innovative in suing companies or organizations previously thought of as outside the reach of this type of litigation. Rambus can than patent this type of legal action, and sue other companies attempting to sue organizations like the EU, NASA, and the U.S. House of Representatives.
.. I don't get it.
its a lame joke, hes not funny.
anyways this patenting is ridiculous... we need a new patent system... too bad that will probably never come.
Anyways im happy with samsung!
lol @ LG. Blocking PS3 sales will just end up angering the massive crowd of gamers.
Both companies didn't want to pay the bloodsucking lawyers until it was enough money into it and it seem Sony decided it was for them so they fired the first volley, now they reap the "benefit" from it.
I wouldn't blame LG at all, they just retaliate with a counter suit to the sony aggression and most likely this will be ended outside court before the ps3 sales is stopped.
Then it will take a few years of "innovation" and patent mongering and the next round begins. Isn't todays generic-patent system just great for us customers when we have to pay the bill in the end. /sigh
LG are suing the one of the co-originators of Blu-ray for patent infringements? How does that work?
LG always sucked.
LG... Life is Good? Seems like they are jerks. These companies are all a bit sue happy.

speak for other gamers , in the mean time i'll enjoy my LG tv with my xbox 360 ,
not that i'm taking sides here , just think this whole "choose" sides thing is stupid , they are both greedy corperations and both ahve gone out of thier way to screw some one in else in teh past it's what buisness' do ,get over it. LG makes some of the best quality tv's , ps3 is a pretty damn good console. who gives a s--- what patents this or that company have and who gives a crap if they sue each other , the only reason you should compalin or coment on any of this is when both companies raise prices to pay for said lawsuits. other than that choosing sides in this kind of argument , is like choosing sides over who is gonna butt ---- you outta , mike tyson or Evander holyfield.
"The patents in the TV case relate to high-definition receivers, and receiving and processing signals."
Oh, they can get everybody with this one! Get the iPhone too, while your at it. It gets sued for everything else. I'm sure it recieves and processes signals when the user's hand isn't bridging the atenna gap.
Stop PS3 sales? LG is crazy.
Why not? It's an old, outdated, crappy system with it's only saving grace being that it has a blu-ray player...big deal? Who wants to pay $65+ for the garbage games that come out for it, really, what does Sony got? Dead Space...GT5...anybody? Also, it's been so long (not a good thing) since the release of the PS3 I forgot the exact price, but wasn't it like $700 or something ludacris?
Look what happens when kids graduate from school and no longer have intramural sports in which to vent their steam. It moves right from the football (fotball) field to the courtroom. "I'm cooler..." - "No! *I'M* cooler!"
Grow up, kiddies.
The whole point of having the Blu-ray Disc Association with it's expensive license (of which LG is a board member of) is to prevent crap like this. Ridiculous, absolutely shameless LG, and I don't even like Sony.

Too bad that's only true of their American lawyers, they went to the ITC because they hail from Asia not the US.
I'm going to take the position of anti-Sony fanboi and say "go LG!" while playing my 360 on my Samsung TV.
As much as I hate the constant patent wars, I hate the business practices and philosophy of a few companies even more. So far, Apple and Sony are on that list. Therefore, I have no problem with Sony getting sued over anything.

The original release was $599 for the 60GB version, $499 for the 20GB version. The original release of Blu-Ray players was in the neighborhood of $500. So what's your point, trolling fanboy troglodyte?
Nobody gives a rats @ss what you think about the PS3, mouth breathing knuckle dragger. Now back under your bridge, troll.
