3. DHCAT At Ground Level: Six Scenarios And 24 Assessments

Each scenario is comprised of anywhere from 3 to 5 individual assessments, each of which is intended to capture some aspect of overall system media handling capability and performance at the task or tasks involved. Each has a name that is intended to describe its role in the overall assessment scheme.

In the next table, we summarize this information, to show you what goes on in each assessment for all the various scenarios

Scenario Anum Tasks Performed Remarks
Enjoy 1 Play HD video Establish basic video playback capability
2 Play HD video, encode HD video Two simple parallel tasks
3 Play HD video, encode HD video, encode audio, edit photos Four simple parallel tasks
4 Sync and edit photos Two simple parallel tasks
5 Encode HD video Two simple parallel tasks
Share 1 Extend media, encode HD video Media streaming plus encoding
2 Extend media to two devices, encode HD video Two media streams plus encoding
3 Extend media to two devices, encode HD video, edit photos Two media streams, encoding, photo edit (four demanding tasks)
Record 1 Record TV hi compression, play HD video Access (virtual) TV tuner, record video
2 Encode HD video, record two TV shows in hi compression Access (virtual) TV tuner, record two shows, encoding & compression
3 Play HD video, edit photos, record two TV shows in hi compression Exercise HD playback, photo editing, use two TV tuners
4 Play HD video, encode HD video, record two shows in hi compression Exercise HD playback & encoding, use two TV tuners
Record & Share 1 Stream video, record TV in hi compression Exercise media server & TV recording
2 Stream two videos, record TV in hi compression Same as above, doubling up on recording
3 Stream video, edit photos, encode HD video, record TV in hi compression Exercise media server, TV tuner, work on image data, video encoding (heavy load)
4 Stream two videos, record TV in hi compression, edit photos Same as above, swapping one video stream in for HD encode out
HD Record 1 Record HDTV Basic HDTV activity
2 Play HDTV and record HDTV in hi compression Watch one HDTV source while recording another
3 Stream video, edit photos, encode HD video, record TV in high compression Heavy workload for four simultaneous activities
4 Stream two videos, record TV in hi compression, edit photos Swap one video stream in for HD encode out
HD Record & Share 1 Stream video, record HDTV Exercise server while recording HD TV
2 Stream video, record HDTV in hi compression Same as above, add compression
3 Stream two videos, record HDTV in hi compression, encode HD video Exercise server on two streams, while recording and compressing one HDTV stream, encoding another
4 Stream two videos, record HDTV in hi compression, edit photos Same as above, swapping HD encoding out for photo editing in

Intel manages to capture all of this information pretty effectively in a legend that appears in one of the DHCAT results screens. In the images that follow, we present what normally appears as a two-column table as two separate images to better fit our Web page layout.

By looking over the icons shown in the legend you get a sense of the full range of activities that DHCAT may someday embrace: those covered in the preceding table are just a subset that focuses on video encoding, decoding, streaming, playback and recording.

Hopefully, the real emphasis in the assessments is clear: each named scenario starts out with a single related activity that's hopefully easy to accomplish, then piles on the parallel tasks to give all the media PCs a serious workout. None of the PC builds we've tested so far has been able to attain passing scores on every assessment in every scenario, and most can handle only the first item or two within any given scenario. That said, both the 4600+ and 4800+ AMD builds failed to attain passing scores in more than half the scenarios, while both the Intel T7200 and T7600 managed at least one passing score in every scenario.
