8. Virgin Mobile

Virgin Mobile has three plans, like stair-steps for graduated calling patterns. You save more per minute as you go up the ladder, but you're spending more time on the phone, of course.

Minutes Cost Additional Information
PLAN 1: Minute 2 Minute
First 10 minutes of the day 25 cents/minute
Rest of the day 10 cents/minute
Add $20 every 90 days to keep service active.
PLAN 2: Day 2 Day
Once/day 35 cents/minute/day
Rest of the day 10 cents/minute
PLAN 3: Month 2 Month
Level 1: 150 anytime minutes; 150 night and weekend minutes $29.99
Level 2 add 100 additional anytime minutes and 350 additional night and weekend minutes $10 additional Use less than 50 minutes at Level 2 or 3 by month's end and Virgin credits your cash balance for unused minutes.
Level 3 add 100 additional anytime and 500 additional night and weekend minutes $10 additional Additional anytime minutes after Level 3 minutes are exhausted are 20 cents each charged $10 at a time.

Nights are 9:00 pm - 7:00 am, M- Thur; Weekends are 9:00 pm F - 7:00 am M; Anytime minutes are 7:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday - Friday.

411 calls cost $1.75 plus airtime and include free call completion, movie listings, restaurant reservations, sports scores, horoscopes, and weather forecasts.

Two Virgin Mobile Phones (phones and prices are as of mid-January 2006)

Kyocera K9: blue backlighting, palm-friendly size and shape, one-touch dialing, voice dialing. Price: $19.99.

Kyocera Slider Sonic: multimedia speakerphone, 300k VGA camera with flash, records and plays back video; player for MP3 and WMA audio formats, and a built-in hands-free headset, transflash memory card, USB cable links the phone to a PC with Windows XP. Price: $199.99.

Conclusions: Wrapping It All Up Before Pre-Paying It

The biggest secret to protecting your phone financial future is to assess and predict your needs in the long term, and take the time to see how well the "network coverage" of a plan will accommodate you as you communicate with your family, friends, and business associates. Remember, the phone you buy with that plan probably won't travel to another vendor.
