Call of Duty to Carry on With New Developer

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Activision brings in the Dead Space leaders to make more Call of Duty games.

Amidst turmoil at Infinity Ward, developers of the Modern Warfare franchise, Activision announced the future path of the Call of Duty franchise.

The plans include the formation of a dedicated business unit that intends to expand the Call of Duty brand with the same focus seen in the publisher's Blizzard Entertainment business unit. This will include a focus on "high-margin digital online content" as well as reaching into new genres and with new digital business models – which some may read as a possibility for a CoD MMO.

"2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise," stated Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing. "In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players."

The company expects to release a new Call of Duty game from Treyarch this fall. In addition, Infinity Ward is in development on the first two downloadable map packs for Modern Warfare 2 for release in 2010.

Seeing the cash cow in Call of Duty, Activision has formed an entirely new development studio dedicated to a new game that will "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre" for release in 2011. The new studio is called Sledgehammer Games and is helmed by industry veterans Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey, both who previously worked on Dead Space for EA.

Yesterday, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare community was shook by the news that Infinity Ward bosses Vince Zampella and Jason West were dismissed by Activision over what the publisher termed as "breaches of contract and insubordination." BingeGamer believes that the disagreement came from withheld royalties from Modern Warfare 2, while Kotaku thinks that it might be down to creative differences.

Treyarch's COD's have been fine, people just don't like the WW2 setting as much. And Nazi Zombies was amazing :P

Misleading article title, isn't the idea that Treyarch and Infinity Ward are swapping titles ( World at War was released by Treyarch and CODMW2 was released by IW).

Its not carrying on with a new dev. its the planned development path + a different new game within a different genre...

roguekitsune :
Well if Treyarch is helping to develop the next CoD we all know it is going to suck. I mean they are the ones who worked on World at War, which imo is worse than CoD3 and I think CoD3 was bad. I dont know what they do different from infinity ward but it is something not good for the CoD franchise.

Little know fact about Treyarch's CoD games -- with the exception of World at War, the developer had LESS THAN 12 MONTHS to finish those games, including CoD3. With World at War (which is a good game, IMO), they had a little more than a year. So to answer your question about what IW did differently....they took their time and had a reasonable development cycle, whereas Treyarch did not. Activision wanted to put the CoD series on a Guitar Hero-like schedule of releases with at least one title a year (gee, over-saturate much?) and since IW didn't want to play that game, Activision passed interval CoD titles over to Treyarch, which caused some serious bad blood between IW and Activision, as well as IW and Treyarch (as I wrote in a previous post in an earlier Activision-IW article, IW loathes Treyarch and mocks them openly for taking IW's baby).

There's speculation that the reason West and Zampella were dismissed was because they did not want Modern Warfare to be rushed into development for 2011 and then they and the rest of the IW team objected to Activision handing MW3 over to Activision's new studio Sledgehammer. And although Actvision doesn't clearly state that Sledgehammer's new CoD title for 2011 will be Modern Warfare 3...I'm sure we can all read between the lines. MW2 could be the last CoD title IW ever puts out, sadly.

RIP, Infinity Ward, 2002-2010

I hope that "high-margin digital online content" doesn't mean something similar to EA's "project bone the used gamer."

If MW2 is the last game IW puts out, then the world is going to be a better place.

Thank you Activision!

Let's hope they pull their heads out and get the COD franchise back on track and leave this wussy console crap for the kiddies.

I feel MW2 suffered in the PC department because of Activision trying to milk the console market, and Infinity Ward wanted to maintain their COD4 tradition, but had to compromise. Looks like that bad blood is catching up and this is the outcome. I feel Infinity Ward is a great company, and I hold Activision responsible for the PC atrocity they released. Let Infinity Ward team up with the guys from Bad Company...

I'm not one of those people that thinks the COD franchise should just end, but I AM one of those people that thinks there should not be a new COD every year. I realize that COD is a cash cow right now, but I just get tired of hearing of a brand new COD game EVERY YEAR. This really makes me just not want to buy it.

Now BFBC2 on the other hand...
This is the game that is convincing me that I really should build a pc this summer. It's either that, or buy the game for my 360, and I would rather experience the game in higher resolutions, DX11, etc.

So with that said, MORE BFBC2 ARTICLES PLEASE!!!

I am quite excited for Treyarch's new CoD title... Call of Duty set in 'Nam? will be interesting as that is not a timeline that has been pushed nearly as much as WW2 and present day. I was much more impressed with WaW than I was with MW2. MW2 appeared premature and underdeveloped to me (come on, no dedicated servers? also using steam/VAC was a terrible idea). Hopefully sledgehammer can rescue the MW series from its downward spiral, but who knows, if it is based on blizzard's business model.. could also be worse too lol

I would like to also add that I really like the COD franchise. I also really like the Guitar Hero franchise. But I stopped buying the games when there was a new one out every 8 months. This is where I am at with COD right now.

Franchises like GOW and Halo do a better job of spreading out their finished products, and I am therefore more excited to buy those products. Longer anticipation periods can equate to wanting a game more, at least that's how it is for me.

Traditionally, I've only liked the IW created COD content. They had my purchase until the IWNET and no modding community. I guess that goes along with the studio heads' desire to create "high margin" content internally and sell it to me. I never buy DLC. I guess I finally have to learn Hammer World Editor and model my neighborhood for L4D2?

Highly unlikely. That ship has sailed. IW fought that battle and obviously lost. This is somethign bigger, like forcing CoD into a yearly release schedule and allowing more third party developers to get their hands on IW's invention, which they have strenuously objected to in the past.

those wussy console crap kiddie gamers will spend more money than pc gamers. Not saying its right but pretty soon you might just have to be one of them to play video games. So quit bitching about it. I get so sick of everyone calling console gamers names.
Here is the thick of it. I play 90% of my games on my 360. You know why because I can play with friends. I can pick up a controller and just play. I dont have to patch games, I dont have to upgrade hardware, I dont have to spend 6times my paycheck on hardware. I dont have to troubleshoot everyone elses computer just so we can play for an hour. And best of all I dont have to worry about whether or not my soundcard is going to break the game.

Dont get me wrong. I would love to be able to game with higher graphics, and a keyboard and a mouse, but none of my friends do. So I will buy crappy console games and crappy consoles. And you will buy crappy console ports for the pc at least while you can.

So deal with it. RIP IW Im not looking forward to another ww2 shooter.

As far as I hate the "forever forever" or "you never know" release dates from Blizzard... at least they do release good to excellent games.

If I have to pick between "a good game every few years" or "an ok gmae every year"..... I will rather wait for the good game!!!

Awesome, simply Awesome! I really hope DICE doesn't get looked over this year on BFBC 2 like they did with the first one. Hey, I loved MWF2 but it can't compare to what I played last night on BFBC2.

I understand how developers need the backing of of a publisher, but do you think Jason and Vince saw this would happen down the road with a billion dollar game franchise they created? It is sad that for the love of games, brilliant gaming minds have to sell out to the devil that feeds them and wait for the day of reckoning that will always come. This makes me believe that Activision had more to do with the debacle that happened with MW2 and the PC crowd. They wanted the control to pull the plug and require people to purchase the new via IWNET.

Good Luck Jason and Vince. Thanks for all the fun you have brought to millions of gamers. Tell Bobby to get lost and find a job making games where it is a "REQUIREMENT" to have fun. :)

Last I checked, you do have to patch games, you don't have to upgrade hardware assuming you have a competent PC (which only costs around $600, so if that's 6x your paycheck, you might want to look for a better paying job). And that part about the sound card is complete BS and you know it (besides, not many people use discrete sound cards anyways).

No need, thank you, if MW2 was any indication of where the franchise is headed then, by all means, publish it but I'll be proudly torrenting it when it's out, and I'll seed the hell out of it for all my fellow peers to download!

Ahhh perfect....take a good game, and turn it into an MMO, turning it into an addict creating, time wasting black hole. AWESOME! Just what I wanted.

/sarcasm

What the hell are you thinking?! FPS is what it is, don't turn it into something else. You can have a great book and turn it into a movie, and all of a sudden it sucks. Don't turn an FPS into an MMO and make it suck.

Honestly, I've played COD since COD2, played MW and MW2, loved all three, however I got bored of MW2 very quickly. I will say though, BF BC2 tops MW2 and MW easily, the whole battlefield tops everything else, props to DICE/EA for that.

If you have to spend 6 times your paycheck on new hardware then get off your butt and get a real job. The funny part is you think you are saving yourself some money but having to pay monthly to be able to connect, more expensive game titles, and additional hardware features - not to mention buying a nice TV - exceeds the cost of a nice gaming platform.

Consoles ARE the boon of the industry. They are part of the casual gaming/quick development cycle issue that has plagued the industry since the release of the Xbox/PS2. So I say **** you to both Activision and IW. Activision just wants to turn quick cash on terrible, shallow, and pointless gaming. Enjoy the cycle you are perpetuating. As for IW, I hate how they turned their backs on the people who put them in business - PC gamers.

Screw them both. Time to get new blood in the industry with new ideas on new technology.
