More Blu-ray Players to Hit $99 This Holiday

The price of technology falls to mass market affordability thanks to China

Think of Blu-ray Disc as a premium product? By this holiday season, it could be a mainstream alternative.

According to Blu-ray.com, which is not affiliated the Blu-ray Disc Association, Chinese manufacturers are slowly being granted licenses to produce Blu-ray movie players.

Top-tier electronics manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung and Pioneer make the majority of Blu-ray Disc players on the market today, but soon we’ll be seeing more off-brand players as we do for DVD players.

Mark Leathan, Marketing Director at Samsung, was quoted in the story as saying that we will soon see a $99 Blu-ray player thanks to Chinese entrants into the market.

The $99 Blu-ray Disc player has happened before, but only as part of limited quantity sales. Some $99 Blu-ray players were spotted in Canadian retailer Future Shop last December as part of an unadvertised sale price of a normally-priced $150 special. Expect to see lots more of those by the end of the year.

Now I'm sad that I paid $300 for a Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo player...

At least I got Heroes Season 1 on HD-DVD for $10...

Not moving to Bluray until they release cheaper Bluray drives so I can pop it into my media centre.

It costs like CAD$130 just for a reader!

If only HDTV prices could fall as fast as the players, it might help as well :P. Anyone knows the % of people with HDTV by "type" (ex: 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p) or even "globally"?

Amen.

I want a 1080P but I can't make myself shove out that kinda money.Especially when the 720p is like 200-300 bucks less.

So Sony finally released the iron sphincter grasp on it's stupid blue-ray. I guess they were trying to milk that 400+ price point on worthless PS3 machines using the old excuse..."but it has a blue-ray in it!"
I suppose the fear of not selling a single machine is starting to set in their thick skulls. They are most likely about to drop the price but I guarantee it will be something stupid like a 128 Mb PS3 with no wireless, no controllers, no hard-drive for $350.

The problem isn't the player itself (you buy it only once) the problem are the movies...
They still too expensive....
But I have to tell u: For sure those Chinese players will deliver lower quality than others...

Might sound stupid, but the first Chinese players might be of higher quality just because they will not have perfected how "cheap" they can make them. I bough one of the first sub-100$ DVD player when it came-out (might be like 7 years ago) and I still use it today. In the mean time, my parents went through 2 different cheap models they bought in the past 4 years ...

Until Blu-ray becomes even more mainstream, the disks won't be as cheap as a dvd. I don't know how much it costs to make Blu-ray disks, but they are probably charging a premium per disk; I mean, around $30 a movie? Give me a break.

I typically watch a movie once. That is what the movie theater or Netflix is for (and Netflix does have Blu-ray media available for rental).

Blu-ray disks won't ever be as cheap as DVD's are today. It took 10 years for DVD to get this cheap there is no way hell Blu-Ray is still a dominant format in 2019. Optical media is so fragile the only thing "next generation" about it is the pixels it can punch. Everything else about blu-ray sucks. Slow, loud, expensive, expensive, fragile, big, heavy. Nah.

Prices for all things Blu-ray will fall as time goes on. Me, I want my stand-alone Blu-ray recorder in the US.

I have had a blu ray player for over a year now and have yet to pay more than $15 for any movie. Most of the ones that I've bought at that $15 price point were new releases after a few weeks of their release date. You just have to look for deals a little harder than you would for dvds. There have been plenty of bogo (buy one get one) deals and such from places like amazon. You just cant walk into a retail store and see a $30 blu ray and assume they are all the same price no matter where you go. Its the same thing walking into best buy and seeing a 500 watt antec power supply for $130 when you know the same thing or better things online at newegg are $60.

New releases on Amazon are usually under $25, older movies can be found as low as $10. Most of my purchases have been in the $15 to $18 range, prices just went up a bit on Amazon since they started doing a buy 2 get 1 free sale.

If you're willing to go used they get much better than that. True, you aren't going to find a blu-ray for the same price as a DVD, but for me it's worth the extra $5 or so.

An inexpensive blu-ray player can only help the media prices drop in the long run.

wait a minute as more and more people with to bluray the cost of the disks should go down. locally blueay disks are sold about $10 more than dvd disks which are now wold for $20 for new releases, thats up $5 over last years $15 for new releases, i cant see why the high costs, the dvds are like dirt cheap, less than a time and how much is a bluray disk in quantities of millions to these manufacturers. cant be much more... or justify the $40 price tag for new releases.

for that $100 you can only get 3-4 blu ray discs, regardless of how old the movie is. so EFF that. hurry up and bring the cost of discs down.!

DVD can go mainstream quick because it's nature, it's no need for "insert some HD Plasma-lcd brand" to play. Hell i can play my dvd movie at any 14' tv, but can blue ray do that? No even if you can afford one you still need large one to really appreciate it. In other word the cost for entry level for Blueray it's too high ( at least for me)

MOST people dotn shop movies at amazon , so your point is really moot GENERAL retail on blu rays is to high , youw atn to talk maozon , damn i can get dvd's for $5 bucks fromther not countign the shipping , so int eh end blu rays are still pricey compared to dvd's. and i can guarantee youwn ant se main stream penetration fo blu ray untill those disk come down to retail at 20 bucks. (that would make themn about 10 bucks at amazon and other online retialers). dotn get me wrong i get what youar e syaign i shop new egg and amazon a lot myself , but average joe blow and yoru grandma DO NOT. they are lookign at retial prices and blu ray retial is jsut to damn high.

oh and for teh guy that mentioend about LCD's as part of cost entry , soon with in next 10 years all borad cast will not only be goign digital (liekt eh mreo reascent transition) but they will also start broad castign in HD only. LCD's are getting cheaper
walmart even has a 42" that is going for right at $595 Bucks , just 10 years ago i paid $650 for a 35 inch CRT (whcih died on us a week ago), so LCDHD tvs WILL nto be an issue as thier prices are fallign every day and more and more hoems will be going HD as they loose transmition on thier old SD CRT's.

Ofcource the prizes will come down, because UHD guality movies will be the next pricy thing, when Blue ray are common and everyone has full hd display system...
Look how mush charper the picture is with UHD than poor old HD format... tvice sharper picture four time more picels.. etc...

But yeah... Those Blue Ray disk are a little bit too expensive at this moment, but sooner or later there only is blue ray versions... you only have to wait 15-25 years and dvd dyes out...

I do not know what some of you are talking about. I have not paid over $25 for a Blue Ray movie. On average I pay around $20. I tend to stay away from any of those special edition versions and maybe that's why, but a typical widescreen Blue Ray for me is around $15 to $25 depending on how old the movie is. Yes DVD is still cheaper and still have lots of them, but I love the Blue Ray movies. Now if they could just get me a burner for cheap I would be set.
