Android's Next Major Release Will Be Version 2.3

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Right after 2.2 will be 2.3. That makes sense.

Android 2.2, or Froyo, is the build of the mobile OS that all the latest devices are running and the rest trying to catch up to. We may have already heard about the next major releases being Gingerbread, Honeycomb and even Ice Cream, but some people want something more in the near future.

An anonymous Google developer posted a response on the Google code boards that the next "major release" of Android will be… 2.3!

We have good reason to believe that Honeycomb will be Android 3.0 that'll be ready for tablets, and that Ice Cream could be 4.0, but those are all far off. Gingerbread is supposed to be for the near future.

While the Google developer did not attach a code name to 2.3, it could be Gingerbread. Then again, both Android 2.0 and 2.1 were codenamed Éclair, so it's still a mystery.

With 'Honeycomb' and 'Ice Cream' being aimed at tablets... are there no plans for future mobile upgrades?

I would love to see touch sensitivity addressed and an improved UI. That would make Android amazing. It's an excellent platform, but those two features make it feel unfinished, in my opinion. I love my DROID though and can't wait to see what comes next!

i love my nexus one but it annoys me that google refuses to improve the ui in terms of usability and speed.... there are many times where the ui just lags up

they have a nice os but they need a UI to go on top of it

my next phone might be a Win7 Phone if google doesn't get on the ball

i'm with gmarsack and 2real on this, android needs to dedicate an upgrade to UI specifically. if and when it does occur, android sales will skyrocket, and we users won't feel let down with an unoptimized UI.

I'm glad to see them work on 2.x some more. I'm using Chrome 8. Looks and feels like they could call it 2 or 3.

Is that a threat? I'm sure Google is shaking in it's boots. :D

Would be really nice if this update adds hardware accelerated UI to all phones with a GPU.

I think they already stated that 2.3 will be a standardisation to the interface, so could mean a whole new interface. not sure what this will mean for interfaces from others like htc sense-ui etc

but there were a few other under hood tweaks and optimisations as well as adition of webm and some other bluetooth voice commands and other video codec support, but nothing major besides the interface on the cards for features from what i have seen.

WebM video playback support
Full UI refresh
Bluetooth voice commands
Broader video codec support

Don't. Most of us are still waiting for 2.2. :( I don't think we have the life expectancy necessary to wait for another update.

Sorry about the double comment.
Jeez, with all these food code names, Android devices will soon turn into real food! haha

2.3 will be a nice filler between 2.2 and 3.0. Wonders if it will simply be a bugfix or would contain new features.
