Best Buy Lists Motorola's XOOM Tablet for $1,199

- By - Source : San Francisco Chronicle

Best Buy was listing the Android-powered Motorola XOOM tablet for $1,199 USD!

Was it the heat from the press, or was it simply a mistake?

Earlier reports pointed to a listing on Best Buy that allowed customers to pre-order the upcoming Android-powered Motorola XOOM tablet. What caught the media's attention was that the retailer was showing an insane $1,199 pricetag for the device, far more than the previously-rumored $799 pricetag with a mandatory data subscription.

By comparison, the 11-inch MacBook Pro sports the same $1,199 pricetag. The Macbook Air starts at $999, and a comparable iPad costs only $729. It's more than most Windows-based notebooks and four times more expensive that some of the cheapest netbooks on the market. Clearly the Motorola XOOM listing had to be a mistake, right?

The listing has since been removed as of Monday.

Currently Motorola hasn't released any official information in regards to the tablet's final price. So far the XOOM is expected to launch sometime by the end of the month, maybe even during the time Apple is expected to finally reveal the iPad 2.

Last month Verizon announced that the XOOM tablet would arrive on its network as a 3G/Wi-Fi device in Q1 2011 with an upgrade to 4G LTE in Q2 2011. Motorola will also offer a 4G LTE/Wi-Fi version in Q2 2011 as well which will reportedly be carried by Verizon and AT&T.

When it finally arrives, the Motorola XOOM will feature Google's tablet-oriented Android "Honeycomb" 3.0 OS, a dual-core processor clocking at 1 GHz for each core, a 10.1-inch widescreen HD display with a native resolution of 1280 x 800, HDMI output, 1080p HD video playback, a front-facing 2MP camera and a rear-facing 5MP camera with 720p HD video capture.

There will also be a 32 GB of storage, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, built-in gyroscope, barometer, e-compass, accelerometer and adaptive lighting for new types of applications. Hardware for mobile hotspot broadcasting capabilities will also be provided, but will likely cost Verizon users an extra monthly fee for the feature.

As previously mentioned, the Motorola XOOM will reportedly require a data subscription. There's also rumors that consumers will need to be signed on for a whole month before the Wi-Fi feature is unlocked.

I heard the price is only a place holder.

The item has since been pulled from their site, and BB has been known to use placeholders before. Nonetheless, people following this product are definitely going to be turned off if they see this and are unaware of it being a placeholder.

I'd be hopeful for two things:

* Wifi only model with expandable storage
* >$500.00 price point for said Wifi only model.

even if it is just a place holder price I'm still trying to figure out why ANYONE would spend 7 or 800 dollars for one of these things when you can spend 400 dollars more and build yourself a REALLY nice desktop...

Anybody remember when I said in another news article I said this would be a iPad killer?
I take it back.. here in Australia somehow the price seems to be $300+ more expensive per $1000 compared to the USA, so I can expect a shock when (if) it get's here..

While many of us agree these devices are pricey, keep in mind the reason for them is desktops aren't meant to be portable.

Putting a rear facing camera on a tablet is just plain stupid.

This should read 13-inch MacBook Pro or "high-end" 11-inch MacBook Air (with 128GB SSD)

They will have a hard time selling them for more than the ipad costs. Samsung is doing OK with the Galaxy Tab but most people would just buy the ipad. I would and I HATE Apple.

OTOH I have friends that bought the Nook Color for $250, then rooted it and they have a fully functional Android tablet for a reasonable price.

I wouldn't even pay $600 for that thing...

I'm not sure who will even touch it if it costs A$1500, when a similar sized netbook costs 1/4 of it

Perhaps BB and Motorola decided to leak a fake price to see what the response would be. Would the market support $1199? Some will pay that but the mass market will not.

What is this crap about forcing people to use 3G data for a month before "unlocking" WiFi? Android is supposed to be all about the open source idea. I want to use it as a portable desktop/notepad solution, not a glorified cell phone. Cell companies can all kiss my @$$ with this gestapo crap. I fcking H-A-T-E push technology.

If its from the inventory system, toms hardware should ignore it. There's also a $10,000 laptop in inventory, but its priced that because its discontinued and no longer sellable.

They should close up shop now. I am sure once you sign up for the data service you will have to pay a huge cancellation fee after that month is up. I bet somewhere around $200-$300. So you are looking at a $1400-$1500 pos. If its $800 then still $1000-$1100. Don't think it'll go over too big

I understand that, if you need to be portable, you can also get a laptop that is rather nice for that price and have a BIG difference in performance and capability.

It only seems to be hinted at w/ the speculation thus far, but am I to assume that if I pony up the $s for the mobile carrier version upon it's release, I can pay for 1 month of data coverage, cancel it on day 29, and voila, I've now got a Wi-Fi Xoom in perpetuity? That's not the worst of situations, I don't suppose, but seems iffy to me...can someone that knows more about it chime in? I would think if that's the case, then having the 3G/4G model might be an advantage, especially if someone later decides they want to add a data plan back on it (like, say a year, when the LTE is fully implemented)...you couldn't change your mind w/ a Wi-Fi version w/o trading it in...

That is crazy man!
I'll go get myself a new 13" i7 notebook rather than that!!
I was expecting somewhere between USD600-900 for that.

Even at 600-900... it's too much. Sure you'll get some people who absolutely hate everything Apple that will buy it.. but for the masses, you have to compete on price 1st. And that price wouldn't cut it.
