Samsung Launching AMOLED Phone Next Week?

1:00 PM - February 9, 2010 - By Jane McEntegart - Source : Tom's Guide US

If these rumors bear fruit, Samsung will announce something very special next week and MWC.

With Mobile World Congress set to take place next week we're expecting to be inundated with gushy press releases from this company and that company. However, one release we'd be more than happy to receive, would be an announcement from Samsung about the company's first "Super AMOLED" phone.

Several news sources are reporting that Samsung will debut its 3.3-inch touchscreen phone next week and MWC in Barcelona. According to OLED-Display, Samsung has suggested that this new display is five times more vivid and performs 20 percent better when it is used outdoors.

Right now, there's not a lot of information (aside from what's mentioned above), but if the pictures are anything to go by, the device is definitely a lot sleeker than some of the touchscreen phones hitting the market now so we're excited to hear more about this device.

We'll keep you posted on this one.

"Super AMOLED"
Great! we are expanding on the acronym...
First it was LED, then OLED, then AMOLED...
guess we now have SAMOLED :P

LED and OLED are quite different.
LED = LCD/TFT with LED backlighting.
OLED = every pixel is a LED, and provides it's own lighting (such as a plasma screen, but a hell of a lot more efficient).

OLED = organic LED, and as stated, due to the organic nature, each pixel is self illuminating

Let's all try not to jump on the silly trend where LED = LED backlit LCD. It'll just get confusing in the future. An LED display is a display in which the pixels are individual LEDs (or triplets in the case of color). They are used in some outdoor displays and 'jumbotrons' Maybe LED backlit LCDs should be called LBLCDs?

Dear Jane, As awesome as another AMOLED phone sounds, I do not think that Tom's should be promoting carcinogenic products.I believe that any phone that requires gloves to hold should certainly not be held to one's ear. With regards,I-

I meant that some people really are that stupid.
And we shouldn't laugh in their face, but help them understand to avoid misunderstandings. Because stupid people usually are quite vocal.

I live in beautiful sunny southern Arizona where the sun shines 350 days a year. I was wondering when someone was going to make a screen that worked in full sunlight.
