Sony Planning PSP Go Phone Running Android 3.0
Who wants a PSP Go phone? Anyone?
This is a rumor we've heard many times before. With Sony Ericsson regularly associating its phones with other Sony products (the Walkman line for music phones, the Cybershot line for camera phones), it seems like it's only a matter of time before we see a gaming phone linked to the PSP.
New information suggests we could see a PSP Go-like phone with Android 3.0 to boot. Citing trusted sources, Engadget reports that Sony is "actively and heavily developing a brand new gaming platform, ecosystem, and device (possibly alongside Google) which they are already in the late stages of planning."
They've been told that this phone is aimed at gaming fans and looks like a cross between a Samsung Captivate and the PSP Go. You're looking at a slider phone, which houses both a touchscreen (between 3.7- and 4.1-inches) and a slide out panel with game controls. Instead of analog controls, the device will have a long narrow touchpad. The device will pack a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and a 5-megapixel camera. Though it's currently branded as an "Xperia" device, Engadget sources say it'll likely carry the PlayStation brand too.
The phone will have a custom skin over Android 3.0, along with a special area of the Android Market Place especially for the games. Titles currently being thrown around are God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and LittleBigPlanet. This content will only be available to owners who own this special Sony/PSP-Go phone, but will reportedly become available to other Android users if they've got the buttons for it.
If it's true, it represents a real change in attitude from Sony Ericsson. Last year, the company declared there would be no PSP phone because it didn't feel it was something they could lend its name to.
"In the past, we have been keen that our product proposition lives up to brand promise, and we feel at the moment the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone," a Sony Ericsson spokeswoman said last year.

If that was a real product yes, though that picture is not real. just a at&t samsung galaxy s captivate with grey buttons of the psp go...
Sony is really getting desperate. PSP Go was a no-go so let's add a phone functionality to it and maybe it will sell. Didn't Nokia try this with the N-Gage?
As long as its not a actual PSP Go and has UMD support maybe.
Why they would keep going with the PSP Go's setup after it failed is beyond me.

If you ask me the phone part is exactly what was missing from the PSP Go. The phone is morphing into the all-in-one mobile device, and is taking over mobile gaming. The reason I have not purchased a mobile gaming device since the original gameboy when I was 10, is because I know I would never want to carry around anything other then my phone. The N-gage was a gaming device that had a phone - no one wants that. What people want is a phone that is good at gaming - I for one think sony is on to something with this. My biggest complaint about trying to play a game on a smart phone is the controls simply suck for it.
I already have an EVO. I wouldn't necessarily buy the phone, but I would buy the games. An after-market attachment for the EVO to add a game controller would be helpful though.
If they do this it will destroy any hope of apple regaining the smart phone market.
No, I wouldn't buy one. If it was a PSP 2, than yes, I would. I already own a PSP and don't really see a reason to buy another. Sony is sooo close to FINALLY doing something right here. Make it a PSP 2 phone and you have an instant winner!
I am definitely interested in this! I HOPE it becomes available next year, I would do anything for it...even kill someone, virtually of course
Interested to see how this turns out. If it were an update to the current PSP, so if it were more powerful that'd be great (although not likely).
Wait to see what some reviews think of it, perhaps.
Put 2 analog sticks and it will do good
The only thing left to say is that it's about time.

I'm with fivewall on this. I had a psp and I never brought it anywhere. I'm 26 and I'm not going to bring around some portable gaming device. Just like I dont carry an Ipod. I carry my phone (EVO) Its awesome at playing music and videos. Games are the next logical step for a phone. John Carmack just showed Rage on an iphone ( I wish he picked Android also) but it was very impressive whats being done on phone hardware. Sony screwed up with the psp go....this is they're good idea
WAIT...I thought only sony products that used linux were pirates?? -Sarcasm for Other os
. maybe $ony will port otheros to android so you can run windows lol.
does psp mean; play station phone!? hahah GO FOR IT SONY! 1 device for all things electronic portable.

... absolutely agree...
This is what happens when phones stop being exactly that and start being another useless piece of technology that no one needs
The PSP, in any form, as been in product and use for too long. My damn phone has more general power than my PSP, which is just sad. Sony is long overdue in creating and producing a new portable gaming system(PSP2, anyone?). Of course, Sony will screw that up and not allow the PSP2 to have backwards comparability(which is what will really sell "next-generation devices) and it will take Sony many years to make the new PSP worth having.
If they are going to make a PSP/Phone, then Sony needs to wait to create a PSP2/Phone. Who is going to waste money on yet another iteration of the PSP? Ten, maybe twenty people? This phone, if made, will just be another spectacular failure.
It will end up being 2065 before the PSP2 comes out, but by that time, Sony will either have been absorbed due to massive financial failure, or Sony will end up being some cheap electronics manufacturer that is only in business to create knockoffs. Oh wait, they already are.
I like gaming, and wouldn't want to carry more than one device, but I'm not sure I'd use this. Breaks from work are too short for gaming, and I'm happy listening to music in one ear and talking as I do now. Once I start working at a new job I may start taking the train, in which case it would sound like a much better idea. The problem is there is only one PSP phone, while there are hundreds of other phones, so I may find another phone, despite lacking the great gaming, would make up for it in other ways and be a better fit for me.
does this remind anyone of the ngage?
that phone that was similar to this that was a total failure a few years ago
Hmmm...the idea is good...perhaps it is time to put my psp slim and HTC Desire aside and get this one.
Battery life?
HDMI port?
I find those 2 questions are my main issue.
gunanyu, it wont have umd drive so you will have to buy all your games again
Couldn't the make the controller a bluetooth and/or mini-usb controller and make a Playstation application and marketplace available for the whole Android market and just dominate mobile gaming??
If go for it if they found some way of throwing better graphics functionality in to the phone, Ive looked over reviews after reviews and unless the Snapdragon has a Dedicated Graphics processor, it has a hard time keeping up with the Hummingbird. I would have to go with aethm If it were a PSP2 phone, Something with a 1ghz Snapdragon, and Perhaps an Nvida Tegra... Obviously the Phone/PSP would have to know the difference between when to use the Tegra and when not to, otherwise a simple phone Battery wont last to long XD. if they did that then heck yeah id be the first to get it....... Obviously if it wasn't on any of the "tiered data plan" networks.
Sony would be stupid to mess something like this up. Psp+phone would could either go two ways, Ngage(failure) or opening a new way to further expand gaming on the fly ie: remote play via 3g/wifi with your ps3. Can you imagine playing monster hunter on the go with friends all over the world on the fly? or a portable online shooter like socom/medal gear on the fly with out waiting dwelling on wifi connections..
No. I don't.
first of all sony already is the top of the line in hand held systems psp go is great has its ups and downs but in my opinion is still good but i think the psp go is still missing alot one thing i would like is if a touch screen feature was added also if they added some phone features such as a sim card slot. it would also be great if they added a feature were you could access the internet without a wifi connection. i would also like if they also added a camera feature were you can play eith your pics like the dsi in my opinion the best thing that sony can do with the psp go is to make apps for the psp go they've already have a few apps out there why not make more what im saying is sony knows what technology is out there why not take advantage and squeeze it all together into one little hand held system if they did that oh boy id buy me that new hand held in a hear beat hopefully sony decides to do this...
the phone concept is good having just bought one from china sony allows you to have a phone and complete gaming console with no compromise its wicked completely touch screen as well as very large clear the "sony psp p99GO" is worth the 108$ american i spent to order it factory direct from CHINA... Thank god for child labor cuz you dont find deals like that in north america lol..
