Hacker Defaces 49 House Sites, Flames Obama

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

A hacker broke into 49 House websites and defaced the front pages with obscene comments about President Obama.

Even though the government has shelled out around $355 million to secure the nation's most essential computer systems, a hacker still managed to break into 49 House websites—consisting of both democratic and republican parties—and post obscene messages regarding President Barack Obama and his State of the Union address.

The Associated Press reports that the sites are managed by GovTrends of Alexandria, Virginia, a private vendor. Although most House websites are managed by internal technicians, individual offices are allowed to use third-party outfits to manage updates and new features. However, after the latest hacking attempt, that may change.

According to Jeff Ventura, a spokesman for the House chief administrator officer, the hacking took place while GovTrends was performing an update. Although no details were provided, Ventura said that the hacker was able to penetrate sites of individual members and committees overnight.

This isn't the first time GovTrends let its guard down. Ventura said that 18 House websites were defaced last August. Now the House is questioning whether it wants to continue its business with the 3rd party company.

If there is no demand for your products/services....create the demand. Now there is demand. :)

They will continue using 3rd party hosting. It gives them someone to blame when things go wrong. Think government.

buckinbottoms :
This wasn't the demand this company was looking for, unless negative demand and unemployment was the goal.

the hacker runs a security company...

He has a demand for business now :)

I agree with manwell999

This is great! I am willing to bail the hacker out if he gets arrested.

Something huge like that should not be using 3rd party software.

Chances are, they were running Windows Server.... imo, you should NEVER run Windows server for an important website.

Well on the bright side, the whitehouse.gov runs on Linux: http://www.yellowpipe.com/yis/tool [...] &lookup=OK

Scratch that, looks like it's running on Linux also... looks like an Admin error or the admin himself did it lol.

So they are going to create everything themselves? They wont use unix or linux or windows? All those are 3rd party software. Regardless of what software they use, there will always be a vulnerability somewhere.

Hmm... I didn't like the speech (sounded too much like a campaign speech than an update on the state of the government), but this is way over the top. I wonder why the hacker (who apparently dislikes Obama) also targeted Republican Reps. Maybe he's crazy!?!?

Sounds like he just made use of a indiscriminate script and never bothered to filter or define who was targeted.

...or he could be one of the many people who realize both parties are corrupt and the whole system is screwed up.

No, there are a bunch of RINO Republicans like McCain that needs to be booted from the party since they have no conservative values.
This hacker is my hero, almost as much as the hacker(s) who confiscated the emails proving the so called scientists were lying their collective asses off about so called man made global warming. Way to go dude.

Quite right; I didn't think of that. But was it the websites of so-called "moderate" Republicans that were targeted?

It takes no skill and majority of computer people know how to do it. Oh, didn't some Indian's DNS redirect twitter? And the "hackers" said that they controlled us or some bullshit...hahahaha
