Google Slams iPad, then Makes Pad of Its Own

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

So wait, you're telling me it's just a big Nexus One that can't make calls?

Back in January, Google CEO Eric Schmidt was asked for his opinion about the just-revealed Apple iPad. Rather than remaining neutral, he provided a comment that indirectly slammed the iPad. "You might want to tell me the difference between a large phone and a tablet," he said.

Oh the hypocrisy.

Up until now, the rumored Google tablet--developed in collaboration with HTC--was to use Chrome as the device's operating system. But according to the New York Times, Schmidt was telling friends at a recent Los Angeles party that the tablet would exclusively run the Android operating system. Either Schmidt was rather sloshed at the party and got easily confused, or Google is also making a big Nexus One clone that can't make calls.

The newspaper also reports that Google moved into "stealth mode" and experimented with publishers in terms of delivering magazines, books, and other content to the tablet. Although Google hasn't formally announced the device, Schmidt's recent comment now puts the device on the map as a direct iPad competitor, shrugging off any doubts about its "rumored" existence.

Ditching Chrome may have been a last-minute decision after the iPad's January unveiling. After all, there are thousands of apps already available on the Android Market, and apparently the numbers are growing rather quickly. Despite the mockery, Shmidt and Google now only seem to be following Apple followers rather than innovators, offering a tablet powered with a specialized mobile operating system originally built for smartphones.

On the operating system side, Google is choosing to go with Android OS instead of ChromeOS, primarily for the applications base as well as end-user usability at the tablet level. Despite the argument for a full desktop OS in a tablet, Google makes the strong case that a custom touch-based OS--like Android OS--is the way to go for this class of devices.

It remains to be seen how Google will be taking on not only Apple, but HP, and Microsoft.

I still dont see how google are being hypocrites, as far as I remember there were roomers long ago before ipad was even known to put android OS onto netbooks and other devices... maybe it was apple who took that idea and ran with it first obviously, but I could be mistaken :P

The difference will be that Android can be customized for a tablet experience by tablet manufacturers if they desire while Apple just stuck the regular iTouch OS on there. Android is a far more capable OS.

I never knocked the iPad for being a large iPod Touch. I knocked the iPad for being another over-hyped, under functioning locked down Apple device. All of the above is still true, and an Android tablet doesn't suffer from any of that.

I'll definitely be getting an Android tablet.

Makes you wonder, had the iPad tanked, would google be releasing this? Here is my take on this:

1.) Apple announces the iPad.
2.) Google conceives a competing product, but waits to finalize design, development and production until they have an idea of the level of interest/reception of the product.
3.) Apple ships iPad, and consequently sells, what was it, 2.5 million units?
4.) Schmidt: "Quick! Scramble the android tablet!!"

Regarding the cry of: "Google are hypocrites, it's just a big Nexus one that can't make calls!", I think this one is too early to call. We have no info on hardware specs. The only thing we know for sure that the Google tablet has in common with the Nexus one is the android OS. I hold out hope that Google will use the increase in form factor to increase the performance potential. I think we should withhold judgement until the hardware specs are revealed. Only then will we know whether Google is following Apple's methodology of "make it bigger using the exact same hardware platform, clocked slightly higher".

Paragraphs 4 and 5 state the same information, and make the article feel 'fluffed'.

Uh, Apple has sold about 450,000 iPads so far. Nowhere near 2.5 million.

Hmm... Flash support? Check. Customizable OS? Check Multitasking? Check. One standard OS for all the updates? Check. Better specs? Likely. Cheaper? Likely.

With a 9-10" screen it will rape the iPad. With a 7" screen it will actually be useful.

But still, give me the Dell Mini 5 (streak) or Viliv N5 already and lets see how long people care about uselss 7+" screen tablets.

"Google Slams iPad, then Makes Pad of Its Own"
It should be: "Google Slams iPad, then Makes Tablet of Its Own"
All iPads are tablets, but not all tablets are iPads.

Yes, if Google's Android Tablet has support for Flash, and the hardware is similar to the new Sprint EVO Android with USB and HDMI ports, along with full Amazon media support (MP3, ebook, audio book, and video-on-demand downloading via WiFi) similar to the Dell Mini 5, then the Android Tablet will be better than Apple's iPad out of the gate. Not only will it get "the full Internet", it will be a stand-alone device, unlike the iPad's need to sync with a PC or Mac.

Android is open, and it supports open hardware, unlike the iPhone OS, and it will therefore win, even if it takes a couple years. Just like Microsoft beat Apple in the 90s. Steve Jobs did not fully learn his lesson.

ipad has the app store. win. i love how all of you back the google tablet when you were bashing the ipad. f-ing fanboys.

Android has the largest % of free apps (apparently). Android is much more mod-able. I hope they do not compromise function for form though. Google should make the device a bit thicker, but compensate with a really long battery life and increased performance CPU... lastly, the device should have a crap-ton of RAM (for an MID, not PC-wise lol) like 768-1024mb. Make this thing future-proof for lots of firmware updates and heavy apps.

Good maybe we can get an os that is customizable. Or hell maybe even a usb port or two. Or better yet maybe Google wont tell me I cant look at scantily clad women because it will compromize the morals that Apple thinks I should have. You know what would make a best selling tablet. Make one that you can subscribe to a porn channel or two. You know like amazon marketplace but for porn. You would outsell the 1984ish ipad on the first day.

Yes and you will be subject to 10 times the Viruses and it will weigh 3.5 times more than the Ipad and it's battery life will be less than 4 HRS. So you can have it, i'm buying an Ipad.

This will be an interesting read for you then: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sh [...] ostcount=3

There are more hacks for the iPhone OS than there are for Android. As for the other comments, they are so out there that I do not feel the need to even address them. Have fun with your iPad.

Wasn't the Chrome web browser the only browser to not be hacked just recently? So if Google uses the Chrome Browser it will still be more virus free then the Ipad..

You don' have to tell anyone you're buying an iPad. We all know you are because of that blind fanboyism.

Why is everyone so anti Apple? My challenge to you is to actually use an iPhone for a week. Or an iPad. For a week. Just use it as you would use any product. Or are you afraid that the simple interface and usability might actually become attractive to you and you'll realize that 90% of your complaints about the device aren't really valid?

I hope the Google tablet is a comparable product. I hope it gets manufactured. I hope it becomes available to purchase in a store that I can walk into. I hope that it provides competition to the iPad because I think that the iPad could come down in price $100 across the product line. But that's not going to happen until a competitive product enters the market.
