BB Storm 3 Packs Highest BB Screen Resolution

- By - Source : BGR

There's a Storm a-brewin'...

It sounds like Boy Genius Report has made nice with a pretty excellent source, as the Research In Motion leaks are coming hard and fast. We’ve already heard all about the BlackBerry Dakota and the BlackBerry Torch 2, both touchscreen phones complimented by physical keyboards. However, RIM is also planning a little something something for those of you who just can't stand physical keyboards. Ladies and gentleman, this is the BlackBerry Storm 3:

Maybe you’re among those who purchased the first Storm and were so disappointed, you didn’t even bother to look at the Storm 2. Though it added WiFi and brought improvements to the haptic feedback touchscreen that was supposed to combine touchscreen sensitivity with the tactile feedback of physical buttons, you had had enough of RIM’s Storms.

Perhaps you could be persuaded to take a look at what purports to be the Storm 3, though? Boasting the highest resolution of any BlackBerry, the Storm 3 packs a 3.7-inch 800x480  display and also features an optical trackpad as well as a 1.2GHz CPU. No word on whether or not RIM has decided to ditch the whole “clickable touchscreen” approach and go for a more traditional touchscreen affair, but we’re confident that this third revision of the Storm will be the most impressive of the bunch.

BGR has it down for a September release, though there’s no word on pricing. Peep the specs below and let us know what you think!

  • 1.2GHz processor
  • 3.7-inch 800 x 480 capacitive display
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
  • Tri-band UMTS/HSPA
  • 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording
  • 8GB eMMC (storage for apps and data), 512MB of RAM
  • microSD slot
  • Magnetometer
  • Proximity sensor
  • Accelerometer
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • 2.4GHz b/g/n and 5GHz a/n Wi-Fi + UMA
  • 3G Mobile hotspot
  • Optical trackpad
  • 1230 mAh battery
  • BlackBerry OS 6.1
  • OpenGL ES 2.0

Nothing great or unique.. Just arranging and upgrading a few things.. batt life cud be short.. graphics may be acceptable.. but not great.. and it looks a lot like htc devices.. in my humble opinion, cellphones shud restart making joysticks.. They are easy intuitive and fun while gaming.

Enough with the spammers! Ugh!OK 5 MP camera? Joke! Needs at least 8 MP. 720p? No, it has to be 1080p. 3G? I'm not impressed by 3G anymore. Get on 4G Is this a dual core processor? Also, screen size needs to be that of the DROID X at least. I'm not buying this phone. Sorry. I'm getting a Honeycomb (Android 3.0) phone anyway when it's available.

...and that's why when it comes to girls you probably haven't "found the right one" yet, just sayin.

To true. Had the original Storm....so now I have a Droid Incredible (that phone that WORKS...POS BB storm)

This is the first phone I have seen from BlackBerry that is not a year out of data at launch. It is also interesting to see that it will not be a Verizon (CDMA) phone as the last 2 storms were Verizon exclusive

ditch the clickable touchscreen and sort out the app store ie port half apple and adroid stores and your sorted. Hopefully it will feature their OS from the playbook since its been touted up so much.

My wife has an LG Windows 7 phone and had barely any usage on her 200MB plan until last week when all of a sudden every night at 1:11 am the phone started sending 120 to 150 MB of data over 3G- even though the phone was at home on wi-fi network. There is something else going on.

You might want to post this comment in a place where it has any kind of relevance at all.

Not every phone has to be the latest and greatest to be successful. Plus, I thought Honeycomb was for tablets anyway.

5MP v 8MP? Who cares, buy a camera.
720p v 1080p? Who cares, buy a camcorder
3G v 4G? 4G is barely available yet, and certainly wont be widespread by the end of the year.
Screen size of the Droid X? I hate that size of a screen! Much too large.
Android 3.0? Only for tablets bro, stay hot.

Late Q3 this year...You realize by then that we'll have dual core Cortex A9 phones at this clock speed or higher. If this is true, it will be MORE behind in the processor from than the Torch 1, not less.

The biggest hurdle RIM will face is it's own software. It is sluggish, and very boxed in. If you want applications through just about anyone it's got to be for the iPhone or Android. No one makes exclusive content for the Blackberry--and the moment no one takes notice of your product, no one cares what it is that you do. (This, despite Blackberry trying to say its' apps are 'super apps'--a laughable notion in and of itself.)

My bet is that in 5 years Blackberry will be regarded in the smartphone community as pagers are to anyone else. Single-application units with little else to recommend in them.

I have a BB Storm 2 and love it. The clickable screen was fixed from the original. I actually like the tactile feedback (it just takes a while to get used to)

RIMs biggest downfall is it has a horrible app storm. Fix that and they'll be back in the mix.

Actually... barely 11 years ago. It was 2000 when the 1Ghz CPUs first hit the market. 2001 when 1.2Ghz was available for mass market.

PC Desktop memory was still in the megabytes... when Windows XP hit the market, the market for more memory... such as 256 or 512mb really hit. Far tiny compared to todays 8~16GB cell phones... but that memory usage is more for data storage of our photos, music and video.... wait a minute.

in 2000~2001, the typical 3.5" HARD DRIVE was an 8~15GB! Our 4/8/16GB SD-mini cards are smaller than a postage stamp!

Checkout wikipedia and goto wiki/Hard_disk_drive and check out the photo of 6 drive sizes.

I do like blackberries, but not a fan of touch screens - still, seems i'm in the minority there, so fair enough.

You're kidding right? Who cares about an 8MP camera. 1080p? For what reason it's a phone... dual core 4G? Might as well just keep it plugged in all day long. Droid X?..lol I had one for a week..had to charge it 3 times a day sometimes.

1) Who says it's not a year out of date... it might not launch for another year. 2) It is quad-band (meaning yes to CDMA) just like the original Storm and Storm 2, so it could be a VZ exclusive all the same (although its doubtful as VZ is more than happy to pimp Android and iStuff).

It's not a year out of date? By the time it comes out it will be over a year out of date. I have the original BB Storm and that was closest BB has been to 'up-to-date' on their hardware.

I was a BB loyalist for many years, I fiercely defended them but now that Android based phones are becoming more in-tune with enterprise solutions, BB is just no longer the leader...

RIP BB

Not everyone want's a huge touchscreen though. That's why the Droid Incredible did so well: great hardware in a smaller (3.7-inch screen) form factor. And since BB goes for business users who don't want a giant 4-, 4.3- or 4.5-inch screen, a 3.7-inch display makes perfect sense.

for a blackberry, this phone looks pretty damn sweet, but it needs to be released NOW for it to be worth my consideration. In 6 more months, the high-end competition will make this phone look last generation, and that is no fun at all.
