America's dumbest criminal anyone?

I generally don't like to let my cell phone out of my sight because growing up with siblings who read your diary every chance they got taught me a very valuable lesson: if you don't want people knowing about it, guard it with your life. Apparently, Aaron Klein never knew the pleasure of having two older brothers and a twin sister around because he thought it would be a really great idea to leave his phone, child porn and all, with the bartender as collateral while he went down the road to get cash.

WISN Milwuakee reports that the Brookfield resident left his phone with the bartender when he couldn't pay his tab. When he returned with the money, he was arrested on child pornography charges.

The bartender reportedly told police that he opened the phone looking for Klein's name or phone number. Now, why the bartender thought he'd find Klein's name or phone number in the guy's own phone, I don't know. I also have no idea how he planned to call him seeing as how he had Klein's phone.

I like how the bartender looked for the guy's name and phone number in his pictures.

He was going to call and ask him how to get child porn on his phone, cuz the iPhone doesn't have an app for that.

For somebody possessing illegal stuff his paranoia level is remarkably low.

Yup... you hit the nail on the head! The bartender was doing nothing more than being nosey. He was probably hoping to see some juice photos or videos and got more than he bargained for.

Not that hard to find out personal information from a cell phone. I have my home # listed in mine so I can voice dial with my hands free while I'm in the car. You can also look in the contacts. If you see a bunch of people with the same last name in someones contacts there is a good chance they are family so now you have the persons last name.

Of course you generally don't find stuff like that in the pics. That was just the bartender being nosey.

Why would you go through someone's pictures on their phone? Having those kind of pictures on your phone or anywhere else is sick but there is also that question of privacy and legality. It is possible that now the guy might get off on some technicality.

Maybe whenever there's a spelling mistake in an article, it's really Jane's evil twin writing it lol

No, because such rules as requiring a warrent, apply only to law enforcement, government employees and people acting at their behest. The bartender is a private citizen, so even though he may have violated the guy's privacy, it is still admissible. If a burglar broke into your house and found your meth lab, then was later picked up some place else, he could rat you out even though his being there was a violation of your expectation of privacy as well as being involved in the commission of a crime.

Please note, I am not a lawyer, but I have researched this a fair amount at the EFF.org website (as well as having taken a few general law classes).

Actually, I think the bartender uploaded child porn to the customer's phone... for not paying his tab and never giving him any tips.

Understandably the guy couldn't call the porn addict, however most phones have the ability to report their own phone number if you dig through the menu. That way folks who don't know their own phone number can figure it out. Or, so the finder of the phone can determine who owns it by giving it to police or the cell provider, etc.

Now, why the bartender (who must be a creep him/herself) was digging through the guy's photos is the other question.

1st Lesson: Don't put porn on your phone

2nd Lesson: Don't view CHILD porn

3rd Lesson: Don't give someone your cell phone

4th Lesson: Pay your tab.

Now that's a scary thought. However, unless the bartender has a certain set skills (which, if he does... why is he working as a bartender?), it would be easy to tell the photos were added by someone other than the phone's owner.

The real question is why the man thought he would need to have access to his kiddie pr0n collection on the go. That elevates him above your 'average' pedophile. Obviously he was so addicted that he couldn't stand the idea that he might be without it for even a moment. Glad they got him off the streets, even if the bartender was nosey.

Smart phones using Windows Mobile have an "Owner Information" section in the "Settings" under Main Menu. My Samsung which I carry for work has my name, work address and work phone number entered into it in case someone finds it.

What phone was it? What phone was it? Was it an iPhone? If it's not then the guy obviously wasn't getting the best pron out there as that's only available on the iPhone.

... Why are people saying don't put porn on your phone? That's ridiculous. As stated in the article, most people consider phones a private space and won't be handing them out for people to paw through. So it shouldn't be found anyway.

Nor is porn itself illegal. So again, has nothing to do with putting it on your phone.

As for jerreece's step #2... Nooo... Clearly the lesson here is to not get caught. Duh.

Yes. Identical DNA yet she doesn't understand the simplest of technologies (I once got a phone call because she couldn't find the power button on her computer) and I, unlike her, am not a musical genius. Such is life.

Pretty sure that on a scale of one to illegal, the guy with the pictures of naked kiddies is higher up than the barman who read his text messages/peeked at his photos.
