AT&T's Case Against Verizon Dismissed
AT&T has dropped its lawsuit against Verizon Wireless and its "There's A Map For That" television ad campaign.
Less than two weeks ago, AT&T was denied a temporary injunction that would force Verizon to pull its "There's A Map For That" commercials. Despite the setback, AT&T vowed to fight on:
"While we are disappointed with the court's decision on our request for a temporary restraining order, we still feel strongly that Verizon's ads mislead consumers into thinking that AT&T doesn't offer wireless service in large portions of the country, which is clearly not the case," Mark Siegel, a spokesman for AT&T, said in a statement. "We look forward to presenting our case to the court in the near future."
Today, in a complete about-face, AT&T dropped the suit. When asked if this was the end of the whole imbroglio, a Verizon representative responded, "Seems you have it right," and then declined to comment further.
Interestingly, Verizon launched a new commercial using the same maps that got under AT&T's skin in the first place.
The news follows a Consumer Reports study that placed AT&T last when it came to customer satisfaction.

Looks like Luke Wilson has his work cut out for him
How many times must AT&T be told that Verizon was referring to 3G coverage? It plainly says in the ad that Verizon was referring to 3G coverage. The fact is that AT&T is embarrassed(rightfully so) and they want to bitch to our nanny government.
AT&T is now trying to look more reasonable, but they are just making themselves look dumber and dumber.
I know a good solution...upgrade their network with the huge revenue stream that the iphone provides instead of wasting revenue on frivolous lawsuits, I definitely won't complain if ATT increases their 3g coverage. Another fantastic solution would be to jump to a 4g network that will also support current 3g hardware...but thats just me...although I heard through the rumor mill that this is exactly what Verizon plans to do....
So in a nutshell, it played out like this:
AT&T to public: "We believe Verizon is spreading unjust lies about us and we vow to take them to court"
Lawyers to CEO: "Uh, Sir, you do realize that our lawsuit is dumber than the lady that spilled coffee on herself at mcdonalds don't you?"
CEO to Lawyer: "Yeah but she won... So we can win right?"
Lawyer to CEO: "Yes, but the problem is that your network does suck as bad as they are telling people, and they got those maps from your website, so...."
CEO to Lawyer: "So we sue them and then sue the assholes that put those maps on our website"
Lawyer to CEO: *facepalm* "Sorry, I quit"
AT&T to Public: "While we are still really pissed at Verizon for spreading horrible rumors about our network which just so happened to be true, we still believe that what they are saying is nothing but a lie. By exercising our right to ignore the obvious truth and facts presented before us, we will continue to believe that we still have a better network and that Elvis is not dead. We also hope that you, as our customers, are also dumb enough to buy into our new marketing campaign featuring Luke Wilson. If you are too smart to believe the commercials which we now present, that it must also follow that you are not cool enough to own an iphone."
Verizon to everyone: "And you want to give these people your money????? Wait, I have a new idea for our next string of commercials...."
ATT sure come out of this looking like dumbazzes and they deserve it. I love my ATT U-verse, but this whole deal makes me lose a bit of respect for the company. Fun Fact: One of the "T"'s in their acroname still stands for telegraph; lol. Oh, and here's irony: an ATT wireless ad directly to the right (yes, I know this changes) ------>
It would likely have been tossed out as being without merit anyway so AT&T is dropping it before the courts call them on being stupid.
Doesn't really matter to me as there is absolutely no cell coverage by any network where I live.
This is not exactly the place to discuss this, but Tom's Hardware needs to fix their user comment software. I can only comment on topics on tom's guide, but not topics posted under tom's hardware.
Fix it. I am tried to typing up long comments only to realize that all the work was for naught.
Yea, AT&T came to my door selling U-verse and I basically told them that I hate AT&T and they would have to have something really, really special for me to ever give them a cent of my money again.
They told me about U-verse and well... they got my money. Turns out that as much as I hate them, U-verse is actually good. Still staying with Verizon for my cell phone though.
Here's my issue with Verizon's commercials, it shows that they have 3G coverage in Alaska (specifically Fairbanks) and that AT&T does not. Verizon does not offer service at all in Alaska and there is no 3G coverage for anyone, at all in this city. AT&T has service here, and 3G in Anchorage (and soon Fairbanks, supposedly)... so Verizon is blatantly lying (either about their coverage altogether or that it is 3G coverage).
"...we still feel strongly that Verizon's ads mislead consumers into thinking that AT&T doesn't offer wireless service in large portions of the country, which is clearly not the case," Mark Siegel, a spokesman for AT&T, said in a statement."
This is a clear example of how companies think the public in general are a bunch of ignorant, dumb and stupid. The issue is not does AT&T "offer wireless service in large portions of the country" but WHAT kind of service. They think we are all morons or something. We know you offer wireless across the country but it is about the 3G coverage of which Verizon shows you are lacking in coverage.
AT&T's statement imo is a insult to the intelligence of public in general. I would like to see there statement in regards to the actual point of 3G coverage, oh and lets not forget the customer service level they provide.
I'm confused, I get T-Mobile GPRS data coverage in plenty of the places missing from AT&Ts 3G map. Obviously Verizon is misleading us somehow here. Anyone want to start a class-action lawsuit against Verizon with me?

Well the problem is there are many people in the general public that think it means coverage in general and how ever little of a population it may be, such marketing is still bad for AT&T and so they chose to fight against it.
Here are my two points.
1. AT&T lawsuit stating that Verizon is misleading customer is basically AT&T saying that their own customer's are stupid and don't know the difference between 2G @ 3G.
2. The new Commercials that Luke Wilson is doing is more miss leading than anything. Verizon Specifically states 3G and AT&T's new commercial is just another attempt to pull the wool over their customers eye's. /wave Jedi hand **ALL is Well nothing to see here..
I llike the new ad

Yup, same here. Verizon claims 3G all around my area (Northern-most part of New York State)...and that is completely false as well...probably when they started having a little kid color a picture of United States with red, they couldn't keep it within the lines...
Same with me. I use an internet tablet running XP for work that has a Verizon air card in it. the thing is super flaky and barely works on the eastern shore of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Of course the map says the whole place is 3G: wrong.
I also have my trusty iPhone with me in the van and it works like a charm. I'm pretty much convinced that ATT's 2G is faster than anything I've seen from the crappy Verizon service in my area however, according to the map, I should have blazing glorious internet all the way home.... Both companies are ripping us off if you ask me but where I am ATT sweeps the floor. I even have a nextel in the van with me and it works better than the Verizon stuff. For all the big talk that everyone has for Verizon I've seen nothing that impresses me.
It looks like ATT is pretty beat up about all these adds but anywhere I go that has their 3G and even 2G it works damned good and I simply don't drop calls, I never even think about it.
I don't know exactly the science behind the two companies tech but I get a funny feeling that just cause they say it's 3G doesn't make it so
I don't believe any comercials when they try to sell you one product over another. If you want to
buy a cell phone ask your friends and neighbors what they got and if they like it. Here in vacaville CA. everyone say's Tmobile is the best. But in your area it maybe different, all you can do is ask around for a month or so till you get a sense for what everyone thinks. Last but not least, buy and try for 14 day's, all
cell hones have a two week trial period. Take the phone everywhere you normally go including inside your house and in the basement and try the " Can you hear me now " game and see what you get. Enjoy!
Couldn't agree more. I just know that i've seen a lot of ATT hate and I drive all over 3 states with 3 different carriers in my van and they win hands down. I'm sure there are legitimate arguments for where they suck but it ain't where I live
Bout time. It's called competition.
hey tonewheelmonster i live in the area you travel all the time and you do realize that you can purchase an external antenna to mount to your house, or your van or whatever you like right? check out www.3gstore.com they have all the info you would need. you can purchase an amplifier for your signal as well, and then you would realize that the maps work and the coverage works as well. you do realize that the area here is flat and the trees can block the signal right? so if you buy an external antenna, like an omni antenna, you will have much better service.
trust me, i know internets. i have the external setup at my own home.
Nice i'll check that out. I have absolutely no control over putting an antenna on my van unless I want to lose my job which is a shame. One of my co-workers used to be a cop and they had those boosters on his patrol car and he swears by them. Of course when he tried to tell that to the corporate heads where I work they just blew him off. It's a shame when they can't even listen to feedback from the people who are out there using the technology.
As for putting an antenna on my house I have no need. I have 5 bars of ATT 3g
A little off topic but I did recently build a wifi antenna out of a can of bushes baked beans. Now that is a fine piece of engineering

ACS does have 3g service up here in fairbanks and verizon is partners with them since they are both cdma. so verizon customers will have 3g service in fairbanks through ACS's network
