Toshiba Said to Be Launching Glasses-free 3DTV
Three dimensional entertainment without looking like a total square.
There are many reasons people are unenthused by the idea of 3DTV, and just one of them comes in the form of those goofy spectacles. If that's the only thing stopping you from jumping on the 3DTV-bandwagon, you'll be pleased to know it won't stand in your way much longer.
Toshiba is said to be developing 3DTVs that don't require the viewer to wear glasses to experience the full 3D effect. A Toshiba spokeswoman yesterday confirmed that it had plans to develop such a device but declined to comment on when it would hit the market. Spokeswoman Yuko Sugahara would not comment on rumors that Toshiba had plans to launch its first autostereoscopic 3DTV before the end of this year.
If you think this sounds kind of familiar, it's because Toshiba first started talking about multi-parallax displays back in April. The company revealed that it was working on a 9-parallax design for use in a 21-inch 3D display (pictured) that would offer a wider range of viewing angles in next-generation 3D monitors. Nintendo's not-yet-launched 3DS handheld console also utilizes the same type of technology to provide users with a glasses-free 3D gaming experience.

count me on the bandwagon
Let's talk price first, then we can talk interest.
I've seen prototypes, and they're less than stellar. I am not a big fan of 3D, and think it just gives producers a reason to take away from the storyline within films and replace it with spiffy effects.

You mean like Avatar?
The reason nobody else has used the 3DS style tech was because you have to be looking straight-on, there's not a good side viewing angle?
What's the viewing angle on these?
I may just wait for hologram TV's...
This just in: Toshiba Said to Be Launching $39,999.98 3DTV.

That's what I just heard.
Sounds more promising than alternating shutters, but if it comes down to a 21" TN 3D monitor for the same price as a 27" IPS...I'll be in the IPS line.
You mean like Avatar?
Avatar was a cinematic breakthrough of special effects, and used new techniques to achieve was has indeed been achieved in that movie. But alas, I believe that it's somewhat of a true fact that it does give directors/producers a reason to take away from the storyline, and just give us eye candy, which seems to work on the masses rather well, unfortunately.
Let me know when they develop the Holo-deck. Then I'm going to hitch a ride on the band wagon. lol
Key things this needs: a good price, the ability to turn the effect off and one easily, and lastly it needs to have a good view range.
the problem ppl were saying about the 3DS was it had a small viewing angle/area that the 3D worked in. now for a small hand held device that is fine, but for a huge tv it could really be the deal breaker.
honestly i have no desire to watch things in 3D. the only good thing to come from this 3D craze is the development of true 120hz refresh on computer monitors =P
I would love to know exactly how they intend to do this. The only other displays I've seen attempted where ones that required your eyeballs to be in a very small space for the effect to work. You ~see~ 3D by your eyes viewing two different pictures and your brain actually putting them together. So you gotta give two separate images one per eyeball, or you gotta feed it directly into the brain. Ohh and you can't let the right eye see what the left eye is supposed to do and such, or it ruins the effect.
i hope i will be able to get this as a monitor nVidia3d vision with no glasses im there

mmm hologram porn
3D television reminds me of the video phone concept. Somewhere, sometime, someone decided that we all wanted video phones. We don't want video phones. We don't want people to see what we look like when we call in sick to work, or call to tell our significant other that we are working late when we are out for a drink, etc. Now someone decided we want 3D televisions. We don't want 3D televisions.

mmm... why .98 and not .99?
3d just gives me a headache.... i walked out of Avatar 3d half way through because of this... granted some effects look good (the ones before the movie, that demonstrate 3d) but still, the cropping issue when say 3d text hits the bezel or edge of screen then ruins the effect.. to me 3dtv is the next thing, now we have all bought hd flat screen tv's.... the manufacturers are hoping that we will ditch our not so old hdtv's and invest in 3dtv's, i for one will not be buying one... (it is a FAD)

Avatar wasn't bad in 3D. What really sucked right afterwards "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D didn't need to be done in 3D. It totally took away what the story is about.
Lucky the movie theater at the time gave us a choice of 2D or 3D.
Darkk
I think I'll pass both, 3D-TV and holodecks. I'll just wait for a portable mini universe.
3d is the boringness!!
Cool!!
If they can pull this off with a good viewing angle and a reasonable price it could be cool. Otherwise I'll continue to sit here waiting for 3d to die...or for someone to create a holodeck.
Husker what's this we shit you don't speak for the masses.
I would love a 3d tv that didn't need shutters, of course it has to be good, and affordable. So I probably be waiting 10 more years.
mmm... why .98 and not .99?
Its on sale.

Completely, yeah. Btw my bad, didn't mean to say "was has" meant to say "what has". But anyway, yeah, totally agreed. Alice is all about the story, and that being offered in 3D was, in my opinion, just to attract more people and to give the people who would see it on drugs a crazy trip, which is stupid. The movie was okay to me.
this was presented at CES and blew the competition out of the water (that required glasses) but the politics of the industry will never let someone come in and compete against their billion dollar investments to look like a dork at home. 3D will only survive w/o glasses.... unlike Blu-Ray which has already been surpassed in Sony, of all people, are in teh works on discontinuing it. Bet the blu-ray forum loves that. B.R. sucks. always has always will. Upconverting for no extra cost, to a 1080p (true or not) is good enough for most people. Plus movies are 10 bucks ON SALE. not 24.99 on sale.
Whats up with all the 3D haters? Its not a fad, its been around since 2002 but required a CRT monitor because LCD's weren't fast enough or bright enough yet. The computer based portion of the tech has been around for ages and is extremely mature. It just wasn't common in home PC's because we didn't have powerful enough GPUs for decent resolution and LCDs were becoming popular but they didn't handle 3D well. More immersible VR has been the holy grail of gaming since the 80's when they released Tron. It only took nearly 30 years for the technology to be mature enough to actually start on it. We're still years away from a real virtual environment, next step will be to replace the keyboard / mouse / controller with some form of virtual interface with tactile feedback.
But will it work if you're blind in one eye? Coz 3D with glasses is no use to me, also I see is the blurry red and green picture with or without them!!!
I don't like 3D and won't start liking it because I can take of the glasses (it's a huge plus though). Today only commercial blockbusters are in 3D and games don't take full advantage of 3D technology yet.
Until quality 3D films and native 3D games appear on the market, my intrest in 3D will be about as high as that in Justin Bieber - and that's so far below zero it's hard to express it using a number.

By "we" I'm talking about people who understand these things. If you are not one of us, then you may ignore my comment. What you are waiting for is a hologram. That, my friend, would be very, very, cool. The physics of light and how our eyes and brain "see" things make a truly good 3D "flat screen device" (like a TV) without the use of glasses virtually impossible. Yes, they will try and they are trying to market this technology to us now, and god bless 'em for trying. But it isn't there and never will be, IMO.
mmm... why .98 and not .99?
There is room for your 2 cent
It's about time.
