Rumor claims Xbox wants to bring older Xbox games to PC and handhelds — here's what we’ve heard
Xbox is allegedly working on expanding backwards compatibility to more platforms
Xbox Game Pass gives Xbox users access to hundreds of new and legacy games from the extensive Xbox library. However, one notable exception is Xbox Game Pass for PC, which is missing the majority of original Xbox games and many Xbox 360 titles. This has been a sore spot for years, but if a recent rumor is true, Microsoft is allegedly working on a solution.
On the ResetEra forums (via Wccftech), user Nate the Hate, who is a fairly accurate gaming insider, claims that “an effort is being made” to expand the Xbox backward compatibility to more platforms.
To be specific, getting pre-Xbox One era games on the best gaming PCs and the best handheld gaming consoles.
"There exists a hope to make legacy Xbox (OG and Xbox 360) games BC on ROG and Windows,” says Nate. “Whether they succeed is the unknown; but there is an effort being made. The other unknown would be how extensive will the initiative be in offerings. Will it be what we currently have on Series or will BC expand to add more titles across the Xbox ecosystem."
This claim isn’t that groundbreaking since we’ve heard similar rumors in the past. And to be honest, there’s no way that Xbox ’s higher-ups haven’t been discussing expanding the Xbox library to platforms like PC.
And now that we’re seeing Xbox games on PS5, it’s reasonable to assume such discussions have come up again. Of course, there will be challenges in porting older Xbox games to newer hardware.
As always, take this and any Xbox-related rumors with a grain of salt. That said, I won’t be surprised if Microsoft announces expanded backward compatibility when it reveals the next Xbox, which rumors claim will be more akin to a gaming PC than a home console. If and when that happens, the tagline “this is an Xbox” will be more substantive.
