What size laptop should you get for school? Here's why I think 14 inches is the sweet spot
Portable, yet sizeable enough
Choosing a college is stressful, so picking a laptop that will last the next four years and beyond with you shouldn’t be. Every back-to-school season, I hear people making the same sizing mistake. They opt for a tiny 13-inch ultraportable to avoid weighing down their bag, only to endlessly squint at PDFs and scroll, or they opt for a 16-inch desktop replacement that will end up compressing their spine hauling it around campus.
The extremes are a trap. The Goldilocks principle applies to finding the right size for your school laptop, and 14 inches is that “just right” sweet spot. This is the only form factor that makes sense for the vast majority of students. Here’s why a 14-inch laptop is the clear choice for students and how recent hardware shifts have helped cement this reality.

The golden ratio
I used a 15-inch laptop in college, and trying to fit that behemoth on the often microscopic fold-out desks in a crowded lecture hall was a study in futility.
While modern classrooms have largely solved this problem, that large laptop is still a menace to take in and out of your bag repeatedly during the day, and it just weighs you down unnecessarily.
