CES is in full swing, with launches and new products galore. Unfortunately for audio nerds like me there's not been a whole lot of activity around speakers, headphones or even earbuds quite yet — but there's enough for me to get excited about some cool stuff.
Some headphones — that are also a Bluetooth speaker
I'll admit, I'd not thought about putting Bluetooth speaker tech into a pair of headphones. Thankfully, though, someone else has, producing the so-called "TDM."
What looks like an ordinary pair of headphones twists around into place to point their drivers outwards for an interesting Bluetooth speaker configuration. It sounds cool, and boasts 200 hours of battery in headphone mode — but only 10 in speaker mode.
I await the moment I get to try one out, but I'll admit that I'm a bit skeptical about the TDM. Bluetooth speaker drivers aren't designed to go near your ears, and headphone drivers aren't designed to be driven to Bluetooth speaker levels.
You'll be able to support the project on Kickstarter in January (this month!), and there's no news as yet on pricing. Still, they certainly look interesting.
Some speakers from a HiFi master
Audio brand Cambridge is at the show, and I couldn't be happier — especially when its brought along some delicious-looking speakers. The L/R speakers are models I tried out at an event just before CES, and I know that they're packing in some wonderful audio goodies.
The larger models feature HDMI ports so you can hook them up to your TV, along with Cambridge's proprietary Stream Magic Wi-Fi music streaming. There are three sizes at three different price points, with a model for everyone.
They also look very, very nice — and come in a very fetching orange color. My experience (while in a special testing environment, I should mention) showed some capable speakers. I'm very excited for them to launch this summer.
Bose features without being at the show
OK, so Bose isn't actually at the show, but its name has still showed up somehow. Earbuds maker Noise has launched a new pair of earbuds called the Master 2, and they feature sound tuned by Bose. Personally, I'd rather ANC tuned by Bose, but sound will do.
The buds themselves have an interesting case design, and are available in three different colors: Black, gold, and silver. I like that gold color. Unfortunately, there is little more information available regarding battery life and the like, but we do know that they'll cost $129 and launch around February this year.
