Verizon Announces Launch of 4G LTE on Dec. 5
Ready for faster bits over the air?
Verizon Wireless today officially announced its large-scale 4G LTE network rollout on Sunday, Dec. 5.
With the launch, Verizon Wireless is also offering new 4G LTE Mobile Broadband data plans as well as two new 4G LTE USB modems: the LG VL600 which will be available at launch (check out SlashGear's hands-on with it here), and the Pantech UML290, available soon. Both will each sell for $99.99 after $50 rebate with a new two-year agreement. If laptop users travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, they will automatically stay connected on the company’s 3G network.
Verizon said that it expects 4G LTE average data rates in real-world, loaded network environments to be 5 to 12 Mbps on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.
The two new 4G LTE Mobile Broadband data plans are $50 monthly access for 5 GB monthly allowance or $80 monthly access for 10 GB monthly allowance, both with $10/GB overage.
This initial rollout is for "business users" and the company expects consumer-oriented handsets will be available by mid-2011. Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network is initially launching in 38 major metropolitan areas and in more than 60 commercial airports coast to coast – at both airports within the launch areas plus airports in other key cities. Street level coverage area maps will be available online on Dec. 5.

Thanks for including Michigan verizon ..... oh well... I have AT&T anyway.... iphone ftw
$50 bones a month!
nope, unlimited data or you fail verizon.
LOL people don't realize you'll need a new 4G phone to use this which no one currently has On verizon meaning people under contract on their current phones will have to pay full price if they want 4G, ouch. That's Fail!
Wow, no 4G phones until mid 2011... that's nuts. I've had my EVO on 4G from Sprint since early October in Minneapolis.
man, that's pricey!
Oh comon, everyone one is disliking that I have an iphone... I know 3/4 of you have one too. Doesn't mean I don't run Windows 7 on a core i7 with Raid 0 SSD, 5850 xfire like the rest of you.
umm isn't the current plan 50$ a month how is this a new and shcoking price? However wih 5-12 MB your going to reach your limit SOOO much faster.. really gonna rake in he overage charges here verizion. I agree they need unlimited. So next year when I renew my phone and if theres a droid 3 4g i'm gonna tether my 4g android phone for unlimited data a 29$ a month with pda net. WIN.
5-12 Mbps download???? I get 4-5Mbps on ATT 3G in the real world here NW Missouri. I thought 4g was supposed to be up around 100 Mbps.
FAIL!!!... I have totally unlimited 3G data with Virgin Mobile at 25 bucks a month. Top that price if you wanna win me over Verizon.
Too much for 10gb a month, no thanks
f the limits.. if sprint changes to this model i'm going back to dumbphones.. i hope people are smarter and don't buy into this so verizon will have to rethink it and add mroe data consumption per dollar
BRING ON THE DROID X 4G!
....maybe with slightly (cough) better battery life, though and a better quality 8 MB (or more) phone. I heard its phone was comparable to the iPhone 4, which has a 5 MB camera.
I can't believe all the idiot comments in here. Verizon's LTE goes live December 5th with 2 USB datacards. Phones will LTE aren't coming until next Spring/Summer. Currently 5GB 3G is $60.... 5GB LTE is going to be $50. Cripes..get some facts before posting.
