Next Generation iPhone Spotted by Developers
It's iPhone 3,1! It could be iPhone 4G!
Apple's naming system for the iPhone in its software has been fairly straight forward. The first 2G iPhone was 1,1 and the 3G was 1,2, signifying feature set upgrade with a similar class-CPU. The iPhone 3GS got bumped to 2,1 thanks to a massive CPU upgrade.
While it'd be logical to expect a 2,2 iPhone coming in the next refresh next summer, certain application developers who log usage statistics have found that an iPhone identifying itself as version 3,1 has been running some of today's apps.
iPhone developer Pandav told MacRumors that its iBART public transportation for San Francisco guide is reporting usage from an iPhone 3,1.
With stiff competition coming in from Palm and Android-based phones, such as Motorola's Droid, Apple may choose to skip the small upgrade entirely and roll out a significant upgrade for its fourth iPhone model.
9to5Mac postulates that this may be the first we'll see of Apple's purchase of PA Semi from two years ago. Steve Jobs previously said with regards to the then-recent acquisition, "PA Semi is going to do system-on-chips for iPhones and iPods."

... or it could be the Apple tablet
That never occurred to me.
If it's actually 4G, I'll laugh. Imagine a 4G phone on a network that can hardly support 3G.
In my opinion iphone is just an expensive toy...but like i said that's my opinion
the iphone has not really attracted my attention... havent really found a good reason to buy one... the app store is nice, but i still view this thing as a ipod touch with gsm built in. as long as there sound is crappy compare to others... like cowon for example ill still look elsewhere for my nerdy audiophile ways

Nobody ever said it was on the AT&T network...

Wow, I have never seen the Cowon S9. That is some piece of hardware right there. Is there anything else like this? Comparison?
they should come out with something new besides just upgrading the cpus by the tiniest bit aswell as the ram it went from 25 to 50mb how bs
Nobody ever said it was on the AT&T network...
Nobody ever said it wasn't, either.
I'm rather fed up with the iphone hype myself. Like many have said, it's just a toy with gsm built into it.
But it's a fun toy. It's not for everyone, but I don't know of any other phone on the market right now I would rather have than my iPhone. I am eager to play with the Droid but haven't had a chance yet, but everything else I have used doesn't "feel" the same. I also realize that the iPhone is not for everyone, or even for most people, but for me it is just right. You say it is just a toy? Dang right it it, and that's why I love it. Audio isn't great, but I don't use i as an ipod except for occasionally plugging it into my Jeep to listen to Pandora and it sounds as good as my mp3 CDs running through a high end head unit.
I'm not an Apple fanboy, I don't own anything else made by them. Never bought into the ipod hype or any of that. I'm a PC through and through. But the iPhone is the best phone on the market today...for me.
I have an iPhone 3GS and I still believe it is hands down the best smart phone on the market. Let me rephrase that, I have a JAILBROKEN iPhone 3gs and I believe it is the best phone on the market. If it wasn't for the ruthless sandboxing and limiting of the phone it would be the greatest thing ever. I love my jailbroken phone but I shouldn't be forced to circumvent apples software just so I can have custom icons and extended options and functions that should come with the damn thing, my iPhone can multitask several programs at once seamlessly yet it's not capible without jailbreaking software. I am excited for the day when a phone comes out which bests all of the iPhones capabilities and has a open platform that isn't limited.
And yet, I just don't care.
in my country, 4G just a dream. 3G network are sucks, so iPhone 4G will no use at all.
I want an IPhone, but for now the motoral Droid is doing fine. Nobody has software that's as integrated as the IPhone. The Droid is a good start plus Verizon's network just plain works. AT&T will never get my business.
It won't be called iPhone 4G because 4G coverage isn't available widely in the slightest. I think there are a couple of 4G towers in the Dallas area and that is really the only place I know of Texas. There might be others but it certainly isn't a vast network at the moment. Indeed it will be the "fourth" generation iPhone (2g,3g,3g) but it won't be called iPhone 4G until it actually launches with 4G radios.
I won't buy another iPhone until there is a redesign. Coming up on that time but if Apple holds off for another year I'll just start going month-to-month with Verizon until I see a phone I really really want. Right now I'm not seeing one. See if Apple can come out with a phone in May that fits the bill.
If it's better I'll buy it. Still the best smart phone going, and I've been using them since the Nokia Communicator (if anybody remembers those bricks which could just barely be crammed into a pocket. And since everyone else still
compares themselves to it, well that says a lot right there. I like the idea of competition and of droid but haven't seen anybody else follow through and actually deliver the goods ... yet.
Perhaps an iPhone Nano?
If we have got to the limit of current network capabilities, fall back on the next thing hardware people do, miniaturise.
they should come out with something new besides just upgrading the cpus by the tiniest bit aswell as the ram it went from 25 to 50mb how bs
The iphone went from 128mb to 256mb ram. It never had 25mb. 25mb would be the standard in... 2004-2005 maybe. Certainly not when the iphone was released.
No specs? I am getting a 3GS within a month and I'd like to know if I should wait til summer.
wait
Would recommend waiting till summertime.
I have no idea why so many people have problems with AT&T , I've never had an issue with the service and I don't live in a capital of a city.
I guess the story with the AT&T service is don't go with them unless ur in a large city...

The RAM in the iphone 2G/3G is 128MB the 3GS is 256MB. Plus more than just a tiny bit of CPU enhancements as well. They upgraded 2G/3G from an ARM11 412mhz (downclocked from 600mhz) to a much more powerful cortex A8 Processor at 600mhz (33% higher clock = far from tiniest bit). That is not counting the upgraded GPU/VPU also (MBX vs SGX) which has programmable shaders and is also clocker higher.
Does this mean the iGrenade App will be more powerful? Maybe it should be the iED App. Cant wait for 5g then, the iNuke will be all the rage.
The 3,1 implies a major change. I bet the change is an iPhone with a hybrid CDMA/GSM chip.
Blackberrys are the biggest jokes. I can't believe people pay for those outdated junkers.
Apple and...
SPRINT?
Woah.
But seriously: Commercials: iPhone 4G, running on Americas' most reliable 4G network (A network that isn't there can't fail, now, can it?)
When does the Apple/AT&T contract lapse? Will these events coincide? Perhaps Apple will give us this revision and plant in beautifully in my local Verizon store? Just hoping...
If it's actually 4G, I'll laugh. Imagine a 4G phone on a network that can hardly support 3G.
Funny thing is that the launch day of the Droid from Verizon, their network crashed here in Southern California. So it just goes to show that most service providers are not prepared for heavy data users.
It would obviously not be called the iPhone 4G, as it would have to support LTE (only 4G network) which it won't until at least 2012. I'm hoping for HSPA+ (21.6 Mbps) support ... in Canada all of our mobile carriers are on HSPA+ and support tethering, so it would be nice to not be restricted by the iPhone's slow HSPA-only capability (7.2 Mbps). Unfortunately, AT&T is stuck in the stone age down south with their HSPA network at 3.6 Mbps, so I'd be suprised if Apple added HSPA+ support.
That and better battery life, possibly through smaller fabrication process of the CPU, would be the two top things I'd like to see ... oh and out-of-the-box support for some sort of multitasking (maybe running 4 apps simultaneously)
AT&T has made the Iphone so expensive to own, i dont mind paying 400-500$ for pretty much an amesome handheld phone/PC but im not willing to pay the UP the ass phone contract BS that AT&T puts you through its horrible plus im not to impressed with the lack luster changes Apple has done with the iphone, the plastic is not typical apple and the ugly chrome bar needs to go.. I would like to see either brush alum or a nice strong black matted back, OLED screen with no lame chrome border.. and of course better battery life, better "phone features, reception, talk quality ect" not sure if thats apple or AT&T just lame to look at 1-2 year old phones have basic phone features the iphone doesnt even have..
