Volkswagen Still Recommends Internet Explorer 6
There are still good reasons why you would use Internet Explorer 6, as much as Microsoft will chastise you for that decision.
A recent discovery made by Geek.com shows that, for example, Volkswagen tells its supplier partners that the best way to use its website is, in fact, IE6.
Of course, the recommendation only applies to vwgroupsupply.com, not the general vw.com website. You could be making fun of VW and how it tells its partners to use a decade-old browser, while Microsoft spends millions of dollars in an effort to convince users that IE6 is risky to use and IE9, or, at the very least, IE8, is a much better choice.
However, with a more reasonable approach, we take the guess that the recommendation has to do with the fact that this website ties in with Volkswagen's internal information architecture, which may be standardized on IE6. Large corporations have standardized their software environment on one very specific browser version and a transition or re-qualification of another browser is a major pain in the neck and requires substantial investment. Until Volkswagen does not see a need to update all of its internal applications, including manufacturing software, there will be no change in the browser requirement.
Microsoft currently states that IE6 usage around the world is about 9 percent. More than half of the world's IE6 users are in China. According to data provided by Internet World Stats and Net Applications, the IE6 user base in the U.S. may be about 6.3 million users, which suggests that a good portion of IE6 users, may, in fact, be locked up in industrial applications.

Most companies like the article stated, have built their internal sites with IE6 in mind. Will they migrate over to the newer standard? Over time they will.
This article is too much " look at that..." really should not be a new article... also exposes VW and other companies to attacks
VW is just as good as IE6
I will not pay any attention to what VW says is the best.
I had a 2001 GTI 1.8T that I owned for 1 year. It spent almost an entire months worth of days in the shop. My roomate had a 2002 Jetta 1.8T that was almost as bad.
VW = JUNK.
I'm going to go on a limb and say it's one of two reasons.
1) Money
2) Laziness
Upgrading a large Web app from IE 6 to IE 8 can be expensive. I've done this sort of thing and it was more work than we expected. Maybe VW weighed the cost and the benefits and decided to stick with IE6.
Besides, IE 6 will not die any time soon. Some corporations still make their employees use it because (a) their own internal apps work well with it and (b) IE 6 is less useful for Facebook and Twitter and other activities you don't want your employees doing at work
You can't blame VW for this, remember microsoft hoped that they could use their dominance in the corporate sector to force their web-vision on to us all. Thankfully that failed, but that's not VW's fault
With IE 6 out for quite some time and the latest is IE 9, you would think they have plenty of time to at least have their site be compatible with IE 7?!
VW shouldn't be allowed to market its items as vehicles since they spend most of their lives in the shop.
VW is in the same category as the rest of the overpriced, under performing junk. ie Apple, Dyson, VW. There are more but can't remember atm. People are brand loyal, but buy more into the hype than performance or practicality.

They are probably just not done upgrading all their apps yet. Here, we just finished our 2 years project of upgrading to IE8 and now the work is starting again for IE 10.
shouldn't that be "Until Volkswagen sees"??
My company (and the much larger one that we have contracts with) has plans to move past IE6....
my 2003 Golf GTi 1.8t is still a rock solid daily driver that goes great and gets excellent gas mileage...
The fact that anyone is at all surprised that the corporate world is mostly still on IE6 only tells me that they have never worked in a large corporate environment. A change to the browser BREAKS many many internal applications. It is in short, a BAD thing to go through a browser update.
Maybe geman want you to be hacked !! lol
All I got to say to that is.

Maybe they just forgot to update their statement?
We have old messages laying around "best viewed at 1024x768", etc...it happens.

My dyson animal and Vw JettaVR6 beg to differ. Both have served me proudly and reliably for years!
VW has also retained 20+ year engine technology in current cars...Time to move on VW!

Passat: MSRP starts from $19,995, user review rating (last year) 8.9
Camry: MSRP starts from $20,195, user review rating (last year) 8.0

This is too funny I work for a Large Airplane MFG'r. we just went to IE 7 (which sux) like 2 or 3 months ago for our Suppliers & our internal use. But we are not in the news about it, WTH? This looks like browser troll bait to me!
You will find many large companies using old browsers because of security issues needing to worked out before they can upgrade. Who gives a crapppp! about what Version of IE any company uses? Except for those working there maybe, big maybe at that!
What does Microsoft use, IE5?
why would anyone care about this? this takes the award for the dumbest slow news day story of the year

I love my VW, 2007 2.0T Jetta. I've never had a serious issue with it and only shop time has been the 10,000 mile oil changes/services. I got it because it was a little larger than the competition's mid-size sedans (corolla/civic) and I could get all the other options I wanted: heated/power seats, leather, sun roof, etc, whereas you couldn't get those from toyota or honda without upgrading to the larger camry or accord. It also gets me 200HP with a really nice power curve, a kickass 6-speed manual (I don't like automatics), and 34 mpg on my daily commute.
That said, I'm probably going to Audi my next auto purchase, they've gone too cheap with the new Jetta and I can no longer get the options I want together. To meet that lower price point they've removed a lot of the nice features and cut back on the various trim features that attracted me in the first place and the only way I can get them now is to either go to an Audi.
if those apps are really crucial, VW better start upgrading sooner than later.

Nope. Couldn't open the "build your own" section in Firefox months ago but worked just fine in IE6 and IE8.
I'm sorry to hear that. probably nothing worng with the car, but when I hear VW I think of the one and only place here to get it serviced. Bad place to go, we was treated like hell, the service manager is a sex affender too, I found out months later! For the way we was treated I will never buy a VW all over the service department!
sorry if my quote don't come out right I am using IE 7 LOL.

Their (consumer-)website IS compatible with EI7/8/9 it's their intranet based applications that aren't. Why change what's working if it works well? Besides it's not the browser that's important for these apps it's the app itself. I don't understand why Tomsguide even mention this kind of FUD. It has nothing substantial to do with tech other than internal affairs at VW (which is none of our business anyway).

Why would you tie up your Web up to a crappy browser anyway?
I don't care what VW says, nobody should be using IE 6. Update your f*cking software. As a developer I HATE having to write custom code for the few people that are still using that antiquated piece of crap.
Where I used to work, they used IE 7. This thing was so slow and a frustrating experience to use. Can't Imagine using IE6. I'd probably explode
VW is just as good as IE6
I'll just consider this comment as a part of the WHITE background.
