Apple Refreshes iPod Touch and iPad Nano

- By - Source : Apple

Today wasn't all about the iPhone 4S.

Apple today announced the iPhone 4S, but the company also freshened up its iPod line (so much for rumors that it was going to do away with some or all of the line).

Both the iPod Touch and iPod Nano got a little attention, with none of the other iPods really mentioned. The iPod Nano now has larger icons for easier navigation (a must when you have a multitouch screen so small); the ability to track your walks and runs (time, pace, distance, calories, steps) right out of the box, no accessories required; and, inspired by those that saw this iPod a year ago and thought, 'That would make an excellent watch,' the option of 16 new clock faces. Apple's got everything from classic analog to Mickey Mouse. Take your pick and wear it with pride, folks.

The iPod Touch is getting the all-important iOS 5 update. Hailed as the world's most advanced mobile operating system (by Apple, of course), iOS 5 will bring more than 200 new features to the iPod Touch, including iMessage, which will bring the ability to send texts, photos, videos and contact information to other iOS 5 users; Game Center improvements; Notifications; Wi-Fi syncing to iTunes; and iCloud, Apple's set of free cloud services that allow you to store your iTunes, Photo Stream, and documents in the cloud and access it from your phone, iPad, iPod or Mac or PC.

The iPod Nano is available in either 8GB or 16GB capacities, costing $129 and $149, respectively. The iPod Touch with iOS 5 and iCloud will be available from October 12 in your choice of black or white and 8GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities. Pricing for these is $199, $299 and $399, respectively.

So not much of a refresh really, as older iPod touch 4s can probably receive the iOS5 update as well.

A price drop would be much better.

Already have a 3g touch. I use it to play music and card games. No reason to upgrade here.

Still no 16GB model touch? Sell a 16GB model for $200, and you're golden. $200 is too much for an 8GB model.

Bummer it won't get the A5 chip, since they advertise its gaming capabilities so heavily. The A5 would be roughly half as powerful in both CPU and GPU as the PS Vita, the A4 isn't even close.

the conference was seriously lacking. probably one of the weakest apple conferences. to me, it seemed like they were trying to play catch up to the rest of the market rather than trying and innovating, perhaps bringing something new like they usually try to do. and they super delayed this conference as well.

again, seriously lacking.

To add to my previous post: Don't even get me started on the prices of the other models/

... No edit function on the tomsguide forum, so sorry for the extra post.

is the vita gonna rock that new nvidia kal-el chip? the one with the 5th core that does remedial tasks? that would be an excellent gaming chip.

I was really hoping for an iPod Touch with an A5. ('Infinity Blade 2' looked really impressive.) I imagine the iPod Touch and the top end iPhone processors will be out of sync from now on....

If they offered an iPod Touch with 16GBs at $199 I might have bought one.

Pretty disappointing. I just hope the iPad 3 has a quad-core processor with even better graphics processors than are currently in the A5 -- at least that would make up for it.

This feels like the beginning of a downward trend for Apple.

Apple refurbish old iPod Touch and Nano with revised iOS (or at least additional app included) and sell it as "new".

I think this is a typo and should read "8 GB or 16 GB"??

well you know Apple doesn't need to sell so many devices now, they found a new more lucrative way to make money, law suits.......

Did everyone miss that the title says "iPod touch and *iPad* nano"? I've made so many jokes about them discontinuing the iPod Touch and calling it the iPad Nano instead...

Not the Kal-El
But it will have an ARM A9 quad-core.

So aside from being white the iPod touch stays exactly the same hardware wise? Thats disappointing.

I don't think its Kal-El, but it will have a quad core Cortex A9 processor and a quad core SGX543 gpu (MP4), so it will be a hellbeast. If the Touch had gotten the A5 it would at least have been closer, if only half as powerful, so the Touch staying with the A4 is disappointing.

I will not buy this new iTouch with this minor changes (Black/White). Stop dumping BS on iTouch and claims its new gen ipod. (iMessage/iCloud/iOS5 are all software upgrades, hell, I wouldn't consider those more than just apps.) Sorry apple, you don't get my vote here.

they woulda coulda hada winna if they 'caved' and started to allow flash on the 4S (give some kind of real reason to upgrade from a 4) I never upgraded my ipad 1 to a 2 as the more speed and cameras not a compelling enough reason to part with my $$ - give me functionality and features,, siri almost a good enough reason,, but there are similar android apps and they are coming out with much more powerful phones,, unless the iphone5 is only a few months away, apple is gonna start losing the phone wars as customers are starting to really see the wall apple puts up
