3G Version of iPad Now Shipping, Jobs Confirms

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Steve Jobs confirmed that the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G model will arrive April 30.

For consumers holding off on purchasing the new Apple iPad Wi-Fi model for the pricier Wi-Fi + 3G version, the wait is nearly over. Various reports are indicating that the device began to ship Tuesday, and should arrive at Best Buy on April 30. According to this post, Steve Jobs confirmed the arrival date himself.

For those unfamiliar with AT&T's 3G service for the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G model, the mobile carrier will offer two plans without the need to sign a contact. For consumers who only want to pay by the chunk, AT&T provides 250 MB for $14.99. For twice the price, AT&T opens the data valve full-blast and offers unlimited downloads.

Previously it was believed that consumers could purchase chunks of data for $14.99, however Apple said that they will be warned when approaching their 250 MB limit, and must decide to either turn off 3G for the remained of the month, or upgrade to the Unlimited plan.

The iPad Wi-Fi + 3G models are significantly more expensive, costing $629 for the 16 GB version, $729 for the 32 GB version, and $829 for the 64 GB version. For those prices, consumers may be better off purchasing a less-restrictive laptop with the latest mobile hardware from Intel, AMD, and Nvidia.

Where did you get you info about having to upgrade to unlimited if you go over your first 250MB? The Apple page - http://www.apple.com/ipad/3g/ - clearly states that "When you need more data, you can add another 250MB or upgrade to the Unlimited Data plan." The AT&T info sheet - http://www.att.com/Common/about_us [...] _sheet.pdf - just says "you can choose to add more data or wait and do it later. If you do exceed the amount of data in your plan, your plan will expire, but it’s easy to add another one."

What a dick move.

"Hey, let's release a brand new product that we know people will buy because our entire marketing budget goes into brainwashing people, and then release another version immediately after sales start to fall with all the features that we didn't include on the first one!"

One of many reasons I hate Apple.

Hmmmm. I buy the IPad 3GS 64 gig early on at Apple's online store - way before the April 19 date - and then I end up getting the thing shipped to me days after it arrives in Best Buy for everybody else? Here it is, April 28, 19:44 hours in Washington state, and I have no shipping notice from Apple. I DO have every fucking accessory for the thing - just no IPad 3GS. I can't tell you how pissed off I am going to be if the thing is at Best Buy and not on my doorstep. But, from what I can tell right now, that is how it is going to play out. SIMMMERING in Washington.

this quote along with all you other morons out there: It was announced at IPAD launch and earlier that the first release will not have 3G but would soon be followed by one that does... this is NOT new news. As "well now" stated, we ALL saw this coming. Except those of you that have a blind hatred for apple.

If you have this opinion about apple, I would love to hear what you think about Windows. Remember Windows Vista?

It was common knowledge since the iPad was announced that the 3G model was coming about a month later. There was no secret. The deal here is that it's shipping two days late

Ignorance. Apple announced the iPad and the iPad 3G at the same time. People who bought the original knew very well of a 3G model coming late April.

Still, what's the point of announcing a product and essentially saying "You have to wait a month until you can get what you actually want". It just seems stupid to me.

I read that all preorders will be received on April 30th and that Apple has an arrangement to make this happen with FedEx. I also heard that this is exactly how it went down with iPhone preorders.my guess is that we see a track number by tomorrow eve and receive our ipads on Friday April 30th, while others wait in long lines to try to buy one after 5pm. Most stores will nit be shipped enough to meet demands and allot of folks will have to wait til the next wave around May 7th or later. Just give it to the 30th before jumping to conclusions....

And the MS fanboy morons come out of the wood works to continue talking out of their asses. It was announced when they announced the device back in January that the iPad Wifi would ship about a month earlier than the 3G+Wifi models so they could work out the 3G kinks. This isn't a surprise. It's expected. And do you really think Apple is brainwashing people? Have you ever watched an Apple advertisement? It's usually someone dancing to music holding their iPod touch. If you classify that as "brainwashing" you are a weak minded individual. But, judging by this idiotic comment I think I can already come to that conclusion.

First off, I'm in no way an M$ fanboy as you claim, and only use Windows out of necessity. Don't you think they should work all the kinks out of a product before releasing it rather than just having 2 separate release dates with 2 separate models a month apart? It just seems like a ridiculous scheme to me, but I obviously don't know anything.

That's funny, all I've seen in their commercials for the last few years are "Here are all the supposed problems that 1% of MS users suffer from, and for these reasons our computers are vastly superior in every way."

I don't understand how everybody has ignored my initial statement entirely and yet dubbed me as an M$ Fanboy. I never once in my original post said anything about the quality of their products, nor my opinion on the quality of their products. I did mention I did not like Apple, but did not specify why. I simply stated that I disliked their marketing tactics, and disagree with the ways they go about doing things. Who's the fan boy here; the person discussing marketing, or the people throwing blind insults regarding something I never said in the first place.

Me 2 (at least I was)... but as far as I saw ... its preview was not looking too good... it ends up as a netbook + win7 + touch function. If you are ok w/ the netbook performance under win 7, you may be happy w/ it.

I've waited (depending on when you want to start counting, let's say with the introduction of OS X) for 10 years for a product this innovative, this well thought out, this game changing, and after Friday, April 30th, points about waiting an additional 30 days will be moot. Apple is brilliant, clever, and sophisticated. That's why I LOVE APPLE. Love, LOVE, ***LOVE*** APPLE!! Yea, Apple!!

Still doesn't take away from the fact that the ipad is like every other apple product...over-hyped and shitty

The iPhone is also the most advanced mobile phone you can buy. All of the other phone providers cannot even come close and have been scrambling to find a competitor, and haven't been able to produce on. Whether you like how they launch their products or not, they are in a class all by themselves with the most advanced products that are ahead of their time. I fo not work for apple but am definately a fan and will wait to get the ipad patiently, because it will ne one of a kind and the slate when launched will not come close.

Please tell me how you came to that conclusion with the Droid as a true competitor? I personally have tried the iphone and the droid and IMO, Droid wins. I'm no Apple hater...just telling my opinion...

Please tell me that is sarcasm... :D

Lets see, how long before the iphone had such l33t features as cut and paste? Or can is mulitask? How about corporate push email that is compressed at source for lower data tranmission times / costs?

The iphone is a reqasonable consumer phone with an immense maketing juggernaut behind it, but the most advanced mobile phone???? You just have to be joking!

Good luck..... Ive been TRYING to order a wifi Ipad for about a month. Apple has screwed up my order so many times, Ive lost count. I had no plans on buying one, I caved. Now I'm just going to wait for the slate.

The most amazing thing that Apple has done is the app store. The i-* products are all delivery devices for a strictly controlled content service and apple gets a spif on every single app. Far better model than Microsoft has/had. If you focus on the hardware you miss the point as far as the business model is concerned. There's nothing that special about the hardware, really.

We're still waiting for Microsoft's "cool", "I want", "easy", "works", "killer" OS. We've been waiting since 1995.
