MediaSmart
I hooked up several of the cables provided by HP between the MediaSmart module and the television, and connected the HP SLC3760N to my wireless router. Wireless configuration was pretty self-explanatory, even for a computer novice. Some intermediate knowledge of software may be required, however, in order to install all of the programs required to enable your computer to share photos, videos and so forth with the MediaSmart (Windows Media Connect). That being said, there is adequate support documentation provided with the display if you run into a snag.
Once properly connected and configured, I was able to access photos, videos and music on my computer with no problem. Photos look excellent, with vibrant colors and plenty of brightness in a well-lit room; family slide shows will be a big hit when viewed on the SLC3760N. Video performance was impressive as well, except that there was some "stuttering" when playing back HD (720p) material. HD video quality when using the MediaSmart was comparable to traditional HD playback.
The music player worked flawlessly, but as you might guess, an external home theater audio system is highly recommended instead of the internal speakers. Another issue with the video and audio player is that not all commonly-used media formats are supported by the MediaSmart, such as Quicktime video and AAC audio formats. In addition to accessing video, audio and photos stored on your desktop computer, the MediaSmart also offers access to various subscription-based online media services, like Rhapsody Online Jukebox, Snapfish photo albums, Live 365 online radio, CinemaNow online movies and others.
All in all, the MediaSmart is a slick, impressive feature with a good variety of capabilities for niche users. But make sure it will get used, as the SLC3760N currently costs about $700 more than the LC3760N, which is the same display without the MediaSmart functionality.
