With fuel prices at where they are, it’s no surprise that the hottest segment in vehicles today is in hybrids.

Car and Driver has an article on the five bestselling hybrid vehicles in the U.S. There aren’t many surprises – with all the usual suspects on the list. To be fair, the selection of hybrid vehicles that provide better fuel economy isn’t very extensive, as the Toyota Prius has the lead and Japanese cars dominate the ranking. But there is one American car as well: Ford’s Escape hybrid.

The Prius sold 181,000 units for 2008 model year, making it by far the most popular hybrid. Toyota’s similar technology but in the Camry Hybrid sold 54,492, while the Honda’s main entry in the Civic Hybrid moved 32,575.

The rest of the top selling list is composed of SUVs. While large, heavy vehicles are largely unpopular now with the price of gas, those who like the added capability (or just the status) turned to hybrid versions of existing models.

Toyota ruled the segment with 22,052 Highlander Hybrids sold, while Ford’s Escape Hybrid was just behind at 21,386.
