Firefox Getting an ''Awesome Bar'' iPhone App

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Now you can read your unclosed tabs while on the go.

Some of us are power users of our web browsers, and we have dozens of tabs open at a time. And sometimes trying to remember what that page was that we were looking at on our desktops, even if we bookmarked it, isn't easy.

For that sort of reason, Mozilla is making an iPhone app that will tie its desktop browser together with mobile browsing on Apple's device. Mozilla announced the upcoming up in its blog, calling it "Firefox Home."

Mozilla tells us why this is useful:

  1. Left work in a hurry? You can pick up where you left off with access to the list of tabs you just had open on your desktop.
  2. Need those directions to that restaurant you were just reading about on your desktop? The confirmation code for your flight? Just start typing in the Awesome Bar and those pages will be right at your fingertips.
  3. Does it drive you crazy to have  to enter the full URL on your iPhone that you’ve visited several times from your desktop? You won’t need to anymore with this app.

Firefox Home

Mozilla hasn't said when it'll hit the App Store, but it'll be free whenever it does.

Oh we all know you just wanted to post the firefox girl again.

On topic though, that's pretty cool. Don't use it on a cellphone myself though. However, to all the people who talk about the taskbar as opposed to tabs, personally, I don't like having applications 'grouped' (when I wasn't using Windows 7 anyway, now it's moot), and I have up to 30 tabs at a time often, so it wouldn't work for me. They really do serve different functions, tabs vs windows. Not saying that liking windows for the point of windows isn't a bad thing, but saying that the taskbar is a 'replacement' doesn't really seem valid.

Tabs uses less memory then running more instances of your browser. Welcome to 2005.

why should be anyone playing with your phone anyway?
I think it's really cool, it's similar to what you can do with google's chrome Syncbookmarks. Which in fact I use a lot, its nice that now iphone users can use that as well, and on firefox.

You believe that cell phones have an abundance of memory to waste?

Yeah, fill the app store with crap like these. Apple deserves it.

Perfect example of fanboyism against a company. Just watch my comment get rated down and this one go up. :)

And all tabs running as one process is a good thing? I'll take the extra memory hit to not have my browser crash and close all of the tabs. Chrome FTW.

Actually, if Firefox came with the FF Girl, I'd be willing to overlook this.

What are those buttons on there? Forget the browser, I have 2 already. I want buttons and a d-pad on my iPhone. Yes, I think the iPhone is way cool. Steve Jobs is a tool though.

Unfortunately I have sworn off FireFox because of its constant issue with memory leaking. If Opera or Chrome had something like this it would be interesting to check out.
