Obama Says iPad, iPod, Xbox, PS3 are Distractions

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

The U.S. President works his BlackBerry fine, but doesn't know how to work an iPad, iPod, Xbox or PlayStation.

U.S. President Barack Obama spoke to an audience of the class of graduating students at Hampton University, Virginia with his views on education, technology and modern media.

"You're coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don't always rank all that high on the truth meter," Obama said, according to the AFP.

Some of Obama's comments were made in light of how certain blogs and talk radio shows can publicize their views; "Some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction," Obama said. "All of this is not only putting new pressures on you, it is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy."

Obama then specifically named a couple of popular Apple portable devices and HD gaming systems as diversions and distractions.

"With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations, -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation," he said.

Hmm yeah they ar distractions - it helps common people get through the week knowing they work all the hours paying loads of taxes because the government doesnt moderate wha tthe banks are upto.

At the end of the day they are intended as entertainment devices. They generate huge amounts of sales / revenue and sales tax.

This is a big problem in my home country where anything some lonely guy in his mom's basement writes in his blog is quickly taken as the ultimate truth and it;s really annoying and stupid

No mention of the Wii? Is it that he knows how to use that one, or is it the lack of any really online functionality, Monster Hunter Tri excluded.

Steve Jobs is gonna make Obama appologize to apple, just wait. That will be the begining of Jobs takeover, when the president submits to it.

What are you all talking about? The systems he named ARE distractions. Distractions from an awesome home-built PC made by us enthusiasts at Tom's Hardware. iPad? iPod? Consoles? Childrens toys ;)

So basically the new news sources which aren't as easy for the government to buy are a distraction because they don't relay only what Obama wants them too?

Wow, reading comprehension much guys?

He's saying that with all the made up stuff posted on the internet, information is no longer about fact, but about entertainment and the story about the story.

Therefore this crap is a distraction from the actual truth.

Jesus, how about you step back and read the whole thing instead of immediately jumping to "OMG BAD PRESIDENT"

Jeez...

Video games absolutely are a distraction. So is TV, movies, and the computer, if you let it.

What he said is true. Stop it with the reflexive defenses from the perceived attack on your livelihoods. Maybe you should think about the facts for once... oh wait, I think you just proved his point.

This administration has repeatedly attacked anyone and anything that doesn't fall into line with their ideology. Never once has there ever been such a blatant attempt to move people away from their own thoughts and beliefs and into those who are in power. This is merely a litmus test to see if they can get away with a Fairness Doctrine that forces broadcasters to offer equal time to opposing views, which the Supreme Court deemed unconstitutional in '87. They refuse to believe that intelligent, thoughtful individuals could actually have an opposing viewpoint, and therefore it must be from failure of media to adequately propagandize for them.

Once again, a comment from somebody who admits that he doesn't even know how to work one of these devices. It's funny that whenever somebody criticizes video games, it's always some older person who never plays games. Until they actually are FAMILIAR with what they are criticizing, then they should keep their opinions to themselves.

@Sabiancym

Actually I agree more so with a4mula than your statement. Yes there are a lot of phoney stories out there. However I see this as a move by the administration being able to denounce all opposing media outlets unless it's certified by them. Would it go to the extent of the "Fairness Doctrine"? Possibly. However it could go the way of the sheep believing everything the gov't has to say and stop listening to honest bloggers. Bloggers that report the stories where the main stream media reports what the Administration wants.

Don't forget this is the same president that used in game advertisement to get where he is today and now he's stating that the same outlet of information is a distraction. Nor does he even mention Hollywood and it's films with its liberal slant on most things (most not all). Films and tv shows are distractions from everyday life with obvious fabrication to make stories. Some times the local news falls into the same category. But does he mention anything about that? Nope because they're in his pocket for the most part and he want's you to TRUST them.

Bottom line.. find your creditable news source or sources.. cross reference them from foreign and domestic stories. The last person you want to trust is the person that says "trust me". Unless of course you're about to fall to your deathand they're reaching out a hand... because honestly what do you have to lose at that point? HA!!
